This is an exciting opportunity to apply for a permanent position in a stunning area of New Zealand. Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital is situated in Hastings, covering a region of over 180,000 people. The hospital is a modern facility with a large range of surgical, medical, oncology and radiological services.
We are seeking a suitably qualified cardiologist who can contribute to development of our expanding service. As an employee of Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, the New Zealand national public health system, you will be part of a collaborative team of five cardiologists providing high quality care, improving equity and health outcomes for our local population, with a high Māori and Pasifika population. The team is supported by one registrar, a house officer, inpatient cardiology nursing staff, a nurse practitioner, several clinical nurse specialists and senior cardiology outpatient nurses, two cardiac sonographers and two cardiac physiologists.
As a general cardiologist you will delivering inpatient cardiology care approximately one in five weeks and outpatient ambulatory services predominantly from our base in Hastings but also at Napier Health Centre and our rural hospitals in Wairoa and Central Hawke’s Bay. There are many opportunities to develop subspecialist interests that will complement the department’s current service, with high levels of unmet need present in our community. The department’s facilities allow echocardiography, CT coronary angiography, cardiac MRI, exercise treadmill testing, ambulatory cardiac monitoring, a diagnostic angiography laboratory and cardiac device implantation (as of this year). Proficiency in left and right heart catheterisation studies, temporary pacing wires and pericardial drains is important.
We also have close ties with allied health services, other specialities within our hospital, as well as with Wellington Regional Hospital, our tertiary centre, who provide a comprehensive package of care including interventional cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery.
There is a strong collegial approach with the wider internal medicine team, made up of around 50 physicians across 12 specialties. The department provides medical education for undergraduate students and physician trainees with a robust education calendar in place.

Applicants must be registered, or eligible for registration, with the Medical Council of New Zealand as a Specialist Cardiologist and must be a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, or equivalent.
