2.5x Medical Education Fellow - Fixed Term Full time x2, Part time x1
(1.5x Waitematā District and 1x Counties Manukau)
The Auckland region has opportunity for 2.5x Education Fellow positions: 1.5x Waitematā and 1x Counties Manukau for the 2025 Training Year to support the transition of House Officers into the workforce. We are the three largest districts in the country and employ over a third of the Resident Medical Officer workforce, with a strong tradition of clinical education and teaching support.
There are two full time Prevocational Medical Education Fellow roles (one at Waitematā and one at Counties) plus a half time Education Fellow role at Waitematā , offering the opportunity to gain broad professional experience and learning in medical education and leadership with career-long impact whilst maintaining and developing your clinical skills. The purpose of all roles is to optimise the clinical and teaching training environment through education, training and support to achieve MCNZ accredicatation requirements. The half-time role has a focus on transition from medical student to house officer. Responsibilities include facilitating, evaluating and developing education programmes, providing pastoral and professional support to prevocational house officers, and providing near-peer liaison between the house officers and the medical education and clinical leadership teams.
The roles report to the Medical Education teams via the Manager at Waitematā and the CMO at Counties with input from the District Director of Clinical Training. Fellows work with the University of Auckland, the prevocational training committee and clinical leadership team in the Auckland Region.
These are 12-month fixed term position (from January 2025) aligned to the clinical training year.
In this position you will have the opportunity to particiapte, and potentially lead, in:
- Medical education and teaching
- Advocacy and mentoring of prevocational trainees and/ or final year medical students
- Project work, change management and quality improvement
- Research projects inc. presentation at relevant events
You will have access to a range of development opportunities required to help build the experience, exposure and networks needed for future leader roles in health.
The candidate we are looking for will:
- Have a current Annual Practicing Certificate with the Medical Council of New Zealand
- Be PGY3+ (or PGY2 with endorsement removal due in Jan 2025)
- Have an interest in education and training with some experience in teaching, coordination, management and/or leadership experience in medical education
- Experience in complex health environments; preferably within Auckland or transferable skills
- The ability to connect with others to influence change
- Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to maintain confidentiality and be trustworthy
- Have interest and/ or knowledge and/ or experience in research
- The ability and enthusiasm for leading transformation for your colleagues
- Flexible, positive and a proactive problem-solver
- An understanding that medical education has a direct link to patient care
- Time management skills with the ability to prioritise
- A record of punctuality and good attendance
- Sound clinical skills and references
- Commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in training education and training initiatives
