We are currently looking for a Utility worker II (Shift) to join our Power Production team in a permanent position. You will be responsible for the safe and efficient performance of general utility duties in the plant.

As a Utilityworker II (Shift):
- You will be responsible for the safe and efficient performance of general utility duties including but not limited to heavy labour, routine maintenance work, operating of equipment such as small tractors, snowplowing equipment, mobile sweepers, etc., cleaning of plant equipment and apparel, preventative maintenance duties, repair maintenance duties, operation of fly ash silos, operation of coal systems, environmental maintenance and control, vegetative control, etc.
- You will provide assistance to other Utility workers in the performance of their duties.
- You may be temporarily assigned to other locations to assist other areas when required and will be expected to travel throughout the province.
- You will be required to take training courses e.g.: in-house safety, environmental, vehicle operation and other training courses related to your position. You must be willing to participate in on-the-job training or training programs that support the development of additional skills.
- You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.
- You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environmental management system processes and initiatives.
- You will demonstrate your knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and your responsibilities under the Act.
- You will take a very proactive approach to Safety in the Plant and will demonstrate your commitment to the Risk Assessment Process consistently.
This position is considered a safety sensitive position. As such, the successful candidate must comply with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Policy which requires a confidential pre-employment alcohol and drug test in accordance with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Procedure.
These skills will make you successful::
- A Grade XII education or equivalent, with reading and writing skills necessary to safely and effectively perform the duties of the position, is required.
- You must be able to perform heavy labour duties with demonstrated skills in general plant and/or coal system cleanliness requirements and be familiar with and capable of using common hand and power tools in the course of the day-to-day work.
- Being self-motivated and having the ability to get along well with others and work with minimum supervision is essential.
- A strong environmental awareness and dedication, with particular understanding and experience with recycling requirements and standards is an asset.
- You must hold a valid Nova Scotia Driver's License with a minimum of two years driving experience and provide a driver's abstract satisfactory to NSPI.
- Demonstrated experience with or certification in staging erection and/or vacuum truck operation is an asset.
You must be capable of working in a variety of confined spaces using all appropriate personal protective equipment and other safety devices
Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities:
- Must be able to lift a range of 17-66 lbs. from waist to overhead on a minimal to frequent basis
- Able to carry 25-66 lbs. with one or two hands
- Use a range of grip strength from simple to firm grasp with turning motions
- Use upper and whole body strength to push and pull 20-50 lbs.
- Perform static reaching from shoulder to overhead occasionally and frequently at waist and lateral level
- Perform frequent walking
- Occasionally perform standing, bending, stooping, and forward flexional movements, squatting, twisting while balancing with neck flexion, extension and rotation movements
- Perform sitting, kneeling, crouching, and crawling on a minimal basis
- Able to discriminate colours through vision and adjust to warm temperatures and confined spaces
