Leading Power Plant Technician I (Chemical Technician)

We are currently looking for a Leading Power Plant Technician I (Chemical Technician)
to join our Power Production team in a permanent position. Reporting to the Chemical & Environmental Supervisor, you will be responsible for directing and performing all aspects of plant chemical and environmental operations within the Lingan Generating Station.


Key elements of this role include:: As a Leading Power Plant Technician I (Chemical Technician):


  • As a member of the team, you will be responsible to direct and perform all aspects of plant chemical and environmental operations within the Plant.
  • Under the direction of the Chemical & Environmental Supervisor, you will be responsible for ensuring the plant operates safely, as prescribed in NSPI Operating Practices and the Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations, and within the environmental stipulations prescribed in the Environmental Operating Permit.
  • You will be responsible to assist and support the supervisor with leading and directing a highly skilled work team on a daily basis and may be assigned acting duties of the supervisor in his/her absence from time to time.
  • You will be responsible to promote safety, environmental awareness, teamwork, and work efficiency.
  • You will be expected to participate in continuous improvement activities and to support all aspects of the work planning process.
  • You may be temporarily assigned to other locations to assist other areas when required and will be expected to travel throughout the province.
  • You will be responsible to assist the Chemical & Environmental Supervisor with due-diligence activities, data compilation, and reporting related to the plant's Environmental Management System and environmental performance as it is related to the ISO 14001 processes and initiatives. You will also assist with management of the plant MSDS system and WHMIS training.
  • You will be required to participate in regulatory training and be willing to participate in on-the-job training or training programs that support the development of additional skills.
  • You will be responsible for your personal safety, that of your co-workers and those under your direction by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.


This position is considered a safety sensitive position. As such, the successful candidate must comply with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Policy which requires a confidential pre-employment alcohol and drug test in accordance with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Procedure.

These skills will make you successful:: You recognize yourself in most of the following competencies, and where possible possess the skills and experience listed below:

  • Candidates must either be full time employee recognized as a PPTI (Chemical Technician) by Nova Scotia Power, or you possess either for the following:
    • A Chemical Technologist Diploma
    • An Environmental Technologist Diploma from an accredited program recognized by Tech Nova or
    • A Bachelor of Engineering degree in Chemistry or Environmental Science, or a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, or other relevant discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution.
    • Applicants with a 1st class power engineering license are also welcomed.
  • You will have five (5) years' experience in a thermal generating plant in chemical operations
  • A working fluency is also required with basic science, laboratory techniques, and environmental legislation at the provincial and federal levels.
  • It would be an asset to have experience in risk assessment and management, environmental site assessment, field and project management, and the use of statistical techniques.
  • You have excellent interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as exceptional organizational skills.
  • You have a thorough knowledge of current office procedures and have proficient typing and computer utilization skills.
  • The successful candidate will be a pro-active team player who is considered a problem solver and can report clearly on outcomes to all members of the management team.
Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities:
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. from floor to shoulder height, with occasionally lifting 10 lbs. overhead
  • Be able to occasionally carry items that require one or two hands weighing up to 50 lbs. with the ability to push and pull at least 50 lbs. with whole body strength
  • Frequently use grip strength to perform tasks
  • Perform static reaching on a constant basis at waist level, with occasionally reaching laterally to overhead height
  • Perform bending, stooping, sitting, climbing stairs, squatting, crouching, twisting, and forward flexional on an occasional basis
  • Possess the ability to perform neck flexion frequently, extensions and rotations occasionally, and side flexion minimally
  • Perform tasks that require frequent standing and walking with minimal kneeling.
  • Possess finger dexterity to turn constantly, perform fine manipulation frequently, and pinch occasionally.
