Role Summary
Reporting to the Recreation Program Manager, the Recreation Program Facilitator (part-time), works to engage youth ages 12–24 in various recreational activities within the community of Yellowknife.
The Recreational Program Facilitator will work with other HBYK Program Staff and youth to develop, coordinate and execute youth targeted recreation programs for those who access programs and services at Home Base Yellowknife.
The Recreation Program Facilitator is expected to be innovative, creative, highly energetic in their approach to youth. The Facilitator will endeavour to foster positive life experiences through recreational activities with the outcome to improve youth’s self concept, self-esteem, confidence and to develop a sense of family and community.
DUTIES
  • Uphold Youth Recreation Program core values of: Fun, Safety, Teamwork, Confidence, Education, Honesty, Integrity, and Respect for others
  • Provide respectful and motivating individualized support to help youth to overcome dependencies, increase independent decision-making and problem solving, and express feelings and facilitate self-awareness
  • Provide normalizing, individualized support while respecting and motivating youth to be engaged in the programs
  • Help to identify community recreational resources and services that are congruent with the youths overall service and transition plans
  • Identify youth needs and interests, assess program responsiveness, and initiate new programming elements, including identified partnerships with community-based organizations
  • Through recreational activities, assist youth
  • in overcoming dependencies, adjusting to life, and making positive changes
  • to increase capacity for autonomy, and independent decision-making and problem solving
  • to express feelings and discuss what is happening in their lives, and help to improve insight into self-awareness and discovery
  • Initiate and maintain community partner relationships, including City of Yellowknife, recreational facilities, local businesses, Indigenous and other cultural communities, for the purpose of offering recreational programming to youth
  • Pre-planning duties for assigned programs and activities to include written cost/fee projections.
  • Ensure pre-approval from immediate Recreation Program Manager is obtained for expenses, and submit a post-program budgetary outcome report
  • Help to create a recreation schedule one month in advance and post details for youth:
  • Recreational activities include but are not limited to sports and other recreational activities, STEM and STEAM activities, attend local fitness facility, movie nights, camping trips, day trips, attending community events, workshops, arts and crafts, friendly competitions, and game nights at Home Base
  • Promote HBYK recreation programs by developing, producing, and distributing printed materials, and posting on Home Base YK social media
  • Ensure environment is a safe space for all that attend including 2SLGBTQIPA+ and Indigenous individuals
  • Ensure cultural and spiritual beliefs of all youth are supported
  • Any other duties as instructed by The Recreation Program Manager and/or the Executive Director
SUPERVISION
  • Supervise youth attending groups or individually
  • Provide supervision appropriate for youth’s developmental age
  • Recreation Facilitator reports to the Recreation Program Manager who reports to the Executive Director
CRISIS MANAGEMENT
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training is considered an asset
  • Employ ethical and safe behavior management techniques to encourage awareness and an acceptable range of tolerable behavior
  • Excellent conflict resolution strategies with individuals and in group settings
  • Able to identify safety risks and ensure the appropriate intervention is applied as needed
  • Assess, evaluate and plan to prevent crisis situations whenever possible
PARTICIPATION IN TEAMWORK
  • Actively support the Mission, Vision and Goals of Home Base Yellowknife
  • Work collaboratively with other staff within the organization
  • Actively participate in team meetings, professional development activities, staff retreat and organization of activities and events
REPORTING
  • Completion of individual contact notes when and a required regarding youth participation
  • Ensure necessary documents are signed before commencing work with youth including: confidentiality forms, release of information forms, and attendance
  • Submit statistics, assessments and reports as required and requested
  • Employ a secure filing system for all documents

Academic Qualifications & Experience
  • Minimum of 19 years of age (*_required_*)
  • High School Diploma (*_required_*)
  • Fluency in English (comprehension, written and spoken) (*_required_*)
  • Secondary Education Diploma or Degree in Education, Phys Ed and Recreation, Social Work, Youth Work, Community Services (*_asset_*)
  • Equivalencies will be taken into consideration
  • Minimum of 1 year previous work experience working with youth or high risk youth
  • Coordinating programming / planning or running sports / recreation programs (*_asset_*)
Personal Skills, Knowledge & Experience
  • Creative, innovative, energetic and enthusiastic, as demonstrated by the ability to energize and engage youth to participate in activities
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Practiced social skills and emotional intelligence
  • Effective communication skills necessary to confidently communicate with youth, co-workers, supervisors, community members and professionals, law enforcement, government employees, court workers, education staff, etc.
  • Experience working with youth who have mental health challenges, and who may be experiencing addictions to drugs and/or alcohol
  • Experience working with youth, youth who are experiencing homelessness, are trauma experienced, and/or may have disabilities
  • Demonstrated understanding of homelessness in Canada, interventions, and factors contributing to homelessness
  • Demonstrated understanding of various forms of discrimination including racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia as they relate to youth
  • Demonstrated understanding of Northwest Territories history, including the impact of colonization and residential schools
  • Prioritize cultural safety and cultural humility
  • Ability to navigate software including Google Drive, Microsoft Word and Canva for administrative and program purposes
  • Experience writing case notes, filling out forms, and maintaining organized statistics
  • Ability to collaborate well with others
  • Ability to respond with empathy
  • Confidence in crisis and emergency situations
  • Organizational skills, ability to multitask
  • Skills to manage conflicts between individuals and groups
  • High level of adaptability
  • Ability to provide guidance to coworkers regarding best practises
  • Ability to concurrently lead or coordinate multiple and diverse projects
  • Ability to build and utilize professional relationships to meet organization objectives

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector (within last 6 months)
  • Class 5 License with minimum of 1yr fully qualified driving
  • Clear Driver Abstract
  • First Aid (current)
