Job Information
Located on the Hay River Reserve and reporting to the Manager, Forest Resources (Manager), the Operations Forester serves as the Department's lead on forestry field data collection and coordination, designing and implementing various forest mensuration programs across the Northwest Territories. This involves training, supervisory, and/or field auditing roles. The Forester has one direct report, the Forest Resources Technician, who works seasonally from April to September and normally supervises the Seasonal Forest Field Technician and up to six summer field staff.
Some of the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the position are:
- Knowledge of current timber scaling practices in Canada;
- Knowledge of standards and procedures relevant to forest inventory, growth, yield and sustainability assessments and timber scaling;
- Knowledge of forest mensuration and sampling methods and techniques;
- Ability to process information by compiling, coding, categorizing, calculating, tabulating, auditing and verifying information or data;
- Physical ability to perform activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as hiking long distances, climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling of materials.
- Strong communication skills both written and verbal for dealing with internal and external clients and stakeholders;
- Organizational and planning skills, particularly for planning and executing remote projects with complex logistics and multiple staff.
Typically the above can be attained by:
Completion of a university degree in a natural resource, ecology, or related fields plus three (3) years related experience such as forest inventory, siviculture, forestry field work and/or timber scaling as well as a minimum of one year experience in a supervisory capacity.
