Purpose The Director of Care (DOC) shall be responsible for the overall management and leadership of the nursing care provided within the PEI- ABH facility and serves as the primary communication link to the Executive Director in delivering high-quality care to residents and enhancing their overall quality of life. Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) or equivalent. Current RN license in good standing.
Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role or in a mid to senior-level nursing role, ideally within long-term care or a similar healthcare environment is strongly preferred.
Duties Supervision and Control of the Nursing Care Department 1) Leadership and Management
Leads Resident Care manager, Nursing Care Manger, Clinical Resource Nurse, Recreation coordinator
Leads, manage, and support the nursing and personal care staff, including RNs, LPNs, RCWs/RAs, and support staff.
Develop and implement nursing policies, procedures, and standards to ensure quality care delivery.
Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide coaching, and create professional development plans for nursing staff.
Promote a culture of continuous improvement, teamwork, and professional excellence.
2) Resident Care
Ensure that individualized care plans are developed, implemented, and regularly reviewed for all residents.
Monitor and assess resident care to ensure it meets or exceeds established standards.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to address the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of residents.
3) Compliance and Quality Assurance
Ensure compliance with all provincial and federal regulations, including those related to licensing, health, and safety.
Lead quality assurance initiatives, including regular audits, resident satisfaction surveys, and continuous improvement projects.
Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation of care services, including resident records, incident reports, and regulatory requirements.
Prepare for and participate in inspections, accreditation, and audits.
4) Staffing and Scheduling
Oversee staffing levels to ensure adequate coverage and effective care delivery.
Work closely with the Workforce Coordinator to develop and manage staff schedules.
Address staffing issues, including absenteeism, turnover, and recruitment.
Act as a coach to subordinates, identify their training and career development, and recommend training courses and follow-up on their personnel records such as timesheets, discipline, vacations, leaves and absenteeism.
5) Budget and Resource Management
Develop and manage the nursing department budget, ensuring effective use of resources.
Oversee the procurement and maintenance of medical supplies and equipment.
Monitor expenses and implement cost-effective practices without compromising quality of care.
6) Communication and Collaboration
Foster effective communication between the nursing team, residents, families, and other departments.
erve as a liaison between the facility and external healthcare providers, including hospitals, physicians, and allied health professionals.
Participate in regular management meetings and contribute to strategic planning initiatives
7) Education and Training
Identify training needs and provide ongoing education and professional development opportunities for nursing staff.
Ensure all staff are trained in emergency procedures, infection control, and other mandatory topics
Stay current with best practices in nursing care, and implement evidence-based practices within the facility.
8) Management Team
Manage priorities brought forward by the Executive Director & the PEI-ABH Executive Management.
Attend Ad Hoc Management meeting required by the Executive Director.
Attend weekly Management meeting presided by the Executive Director and rolled-out to all Department Managers.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
9) Reporting
Provide analytical reports in a timely and accurate manner to the Executive Director in order to meet the Department requirements, policies and standards.
