THE COMPANY:
The Splatsin are the most southern tribe of the Secwepemc Nation, the largest Interior Salish speaking First Nation in Canada whose aboriginal territory stretches from the BC/Alberta border near the Yellowhead Pass to the plateau west of the Fraser River, southeast to the Arrow Lakes and to the upper reaches of the Columbia River. Shihiya School has been owned and operated by Splatsin since 1980. The preschool through grade seven curriculum follows that of the Province of B.C. in addition to the integration of Splatsin language and culture into learning. The school is Certified by the First Nations Schools Association (FNSA) every five years and is federally funded by Indigenous Services Canada (ISC).
THE OPPORTUNITY:Shihiya School is currently recruiting a Part-Time Counsellor to join their team of professionals. Reporting to the Head Teacher, the school Counsellor will play a key role in supporting the development of students with personal social-emotional counselling services, case planning and intervention for students at risk or experiencing social, emotional, behavioural and/or developmental difficulties. The school counsellor will collaborate with staff, students, parents/guardians, and members of the community to further create and enhance an effective, healthy learning environment for all students registered at Shihiya School. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A COUNSELLOR: As the Counsellor you will:
Provide one-to-one and/or group counselling to students, families/guardians, and staff.
Provide case planning and intervention for students at risk or experiencing social, emotional, behavioural and/or developmental difficulties, collaborating with staff and parents/guardians.
Function as a consultant participating in integrated case management (i.e., staff meetings, IEP Reviews, critical incident & risk assessment etc.)
Consult, liaise, and provide appropriate referrals for students with complex or long-term concerns to health specialists in collaboration with students and family/guardians.
Respond to emergent issues and intervene in crisis situations, developing appropriate management strategies.
Excellent verbal and written communication with tact and sound judgement
Maintain documentation and progress notes in accordance with legal obligations
Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality in all interactions.
Assists students/families-guardians in understanding school policy & procedures
Administrative Duties:
Report on case load to Head Teacher
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Splatsin policies and procedures
You need access to your own laptop and data storage for client documentation.
OUR “MUST HAVES” THAT MAKE YOU GREAT: Qualifications:
Master of Social Work, Master of Psychology, Master of Clinical or School Counselling or equivalent skills, abilities, and experience
Current registration with a regulatory body and a member of good standing
Min. 1 year counselling experience with knowledge of various counselling models
Successful experience in providing a variety of in-service workshops
Suicide prevention training
NVCI training
Previous experience working in a First Nations school, community or organization OR extensive knowledge of First Nation History/Colonial impacts and Cultural Sensitivity Training
Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check for vulnerable populations
Registered with First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) and be an approved provider
Competencies:
Ability to work with students/families/guardians in a respectful, strength-based way to incorporate cultural practices, values, and beliefs
Knowledge of Splatsin community and Secwepemc culture an asset
Ability to work with diverse backgrounds & levels of ability
Advocate in the best interest of the student/family-guardian
Proficient with computers and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point)
Willing to participate in job related workshops, courses, or training to further skills
Must have a valid Class 5 Driver's License
Overtime may be required
