Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is inviting applications for a Permanent, Full Time Building Service Technician with Property, Fleet and Environment.

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Building Operations, Facility Maintenance & Operations, the Building Service Technician will be generally accountable for the operational performance and standards compliance of HRM Facilities fire and life safety systems and mechanical equipment.
Duties will consist of non-licensed demand, planned and code-compliance maintenance activities which include, but not limited to, visual inspections of fire extinguishers and fire system devices, equipment air filter/oil filter/belt changes, light bulb replacements, monthly testing of emergency exit lighting, installation and regular maintenance of first aid kits and eye wash stations, installation of various product dispensers, installation of health and safety signage, regular maintenance of water softeners and systems, seasonal checks and cleanings of air conditioning/condensing units and exhaust fans and regular updating building systems report binders/logs. The Building Service Technician will also assist in pool operations as required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- First line of response in the care of HRM facilities and the equipment therein.
- Primary contact for tenant relations.
- Oversee the safety, functionality and security of HRM facilities for HRM staff and tenants.
- Perform non-licensed, on-demand repair activities on facilities and equipment.
- Perform non-licensed, planned maintenance activities on facilities and equipment as per the Preventative Maintenance Program.
- Participate in continuous improvement of Preventive Maintenance Program.
- Perform regular facility audits for identification of abnormal situations affecting safety, operation, or security of HRM equipment and facilities.
- Participate in continuous improvement of the facility audit process.
- Take appropriate corrective action upon identification of abnormal situations.
- Record all work performed in detail for code requirements.
- Keep running logs on all buildings maintained by Facility Maintenance and Operations.
- May perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Minimum 2 years’ experience working as a Tradesperson or Utility Worker in a building maintenance environment.
- Building Systems Technician designation an asset; or willingness to obtain certification in the Building Systems Technician program.
- Certified Pool Operators Course (CPO) is an asset.
- Nova Scotia Department of Labour 2nd Class Refrigeration Certificate is an asset.
- Must have training in WHMIS and First Aid/CPR or willingness to obtain.
- Current & valid NS Driver’s license (minimum Class 5). Must provide drivers abstract.
- Must have training in Entry to Confined Spaces and Fall Arrest or willingness to obtain.
Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
- General knowledge and ability to work with tools safely.
- Clear understanding of the Real Property Service delivery system and its Work Order system.
- Self-motivated and self-directed.
- Must demonstrate effectiveness in the following competencies: communication, customer service, teamwork, achievement motivation, concern for order and quality, and diversity.
- Must be reliable, punctual, and have a good attendance record.
- Must be willing to complete LEED training if required.
Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.

SALARY: $26.97 per hour as per the CUPE Local 108 Collective Agreement
