Primary objective
As part of a project team collect and compile soil-landscape information for land type-based pastoral carrying capacities and
an agricultural soil and land management manual for the Northern Territory (NT).
Context Statement
Under the National Soil Action Plan 2023-2028 the Australian Government is partnering with the NT to support improved
soil and land management through (i) the development of land type-based pastoral carrying capacities and (ii) an agricultural
soil and land management manual for the NT. The position will be supervised by a senior scientist and receive the
professional training to undertake the projects.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. As part of a small team carryout a review of available soil data and mapping across selected pastoral regions and
agricultural precincts in the NT.
2. Take an active role in site selection and planning of remote field operations.
3. Undertake field operations to collect soil landscape data and information to national standards.
4. Secure field data in the NT Soil and Land Information ( SALInfo ) system.
5. Take an active role in the spatial analysis, interpretation and extrapolation of soil and land resource data in a geographic
information system.
6. Play a key role compiling technical publications and extension material for industry use.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A relevant scientific degree qualification from a recognised university or tertiary institution.
2. Experience collecting field based natural resource data relating to soil, vegetation or equivalent.
3. A willingness to develop field-based skills used in soil and land resource assessment.
4. Knowledge of geographic information systems and its applications in natural resource management.
5. Ability to interpret natural resource data and compile technical based information and products for a range of audiences.
6. Current manual NT Drivers Licence or equivalent including an ability to operate a four-wheel drive.
Desirable
1. North Australian natural resource assessment experience.
