First Nations Cultural Practitioner

  • Full-time ongoing position
  • Based in Playford (primarily northern, also central)
  • Supporting First Nations and/or Torres Strait Islander children and/or young people in foster care placements and working as part of a team in child protection

Who are we looking for?
We are seeking a passionate First Nations person to embed culture in the daily lives of First Nations children in Out of Home Care. First Nations Cultural Practitioners build relationships with First Nations children and young people and work intentionally towards strong and productive relationships with non-First Nations Foster Carers and care teams around a child.
Your cultural knowledge and expertise and lived experience of the impact of intergenerational trauma will be when working with a team of Placement Support Workers to build understanding of the importance of cultural immersion and help to centre cultural identity in all decision making for children and young people.
What can you expect to be doing?
  • Working with a strengths-based approach with First Nations children and young people directly to develop cultural support plans.
  • Advocating within the broader care team that sits around First Nations children and young people to ensure that cultural identity and connection to culture remains centred
  • Providing guidance and support to non-First Nations Foster Carers, internal and external colleagues and other care team members to ensure the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement principal is at the forefront of decision making.
  • Connect and collaborate with biological family, kin, Elders, community members, First Nations service providers (ACCOs), to achieve goals set out in cultural support plans.
What do you need to bring?
  • Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, and be accepted by your community as being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
  • Skills and experience (including lived experiences) from supporting or working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and children and young people
  • Demonstrated understanding of the importance of cultural immersion, connection and recording life stories
  • Training or certificates/qualifications that meets the minimum requirements as set out by the Department for Child Protection’s minimum qualification for service provider personnel or be willing to work towards.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills with proven strengths in culturally safe practice, teamwork and building strong relationships
  • An understanding of Child Protection and Out of Home Care systems and policies and awareness of state legislation including the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principles

Qualifications
  • Tertiary qualifications in social work, social sciences, community development, community services or a related field, or relevant experience (desirable).
  • Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and identify and be accepted within their community as being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
Special Conditions
  • National Police Check / Working with Children Check
  • Driver's licence
  • Safe Environments for Children & Young People Certificate (or work toward gaining)
