About the Opportunity
South Western Sydney has a large, very diverse community, with many young families. There’s an interesting mix of urban, semi-rural and rural settings. The new international airport is due to open in 2026 with potential implications for the area.

The role entails general environmental health duties as described by relevant legislation and policies, with a focus on keeping the local population healthy.
You will be working with Environmental health team, Other Public Health Unit staff and NSW Health Department and other agencies including Local Councils.

What You'll be Doing
The Environmental Health Officer (EHO) will primarily work across a range of environmental health issues including but not limited to the investigation of elevated blood lead notifications, private drinking water supplies & quality assurance program monitoring activities and to undertake e-cigarette & tobacco control compliance inspections (complying with relevant legislation, policies and operational business plans).
The EHO will support the Environmental Health team in responding to major issues and incidents as may occur from time to time. The officer may be required to undertake some activities outside normal business hours including participating in the after-hours on-call roster

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent in Applied Science (Environmental Health), or an equivalent qualification acceptable for professional membership to Environmental Health Australia or other environmental health/management qualifications deemed equivalent by the employer.
  • An understanding and experience with public health and relevant environmental health legislation in NSW and demonstrated experience in evidence gathering, preparation of legal briefs, attendance at court, conducting prosecutions, including the presentation of evidence in public health matters.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare comprehensive submissions, briefs, reports and correspondence, including those for the approval of and under the signature of senior directors/ executives and to meet these deadlines, and work with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to plan and complete tasks independently, meet deadlines, respond to emergencies and work with a minimum of supervision.
  • A demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in identifying, analysing and managing environmental health risks with the ability to solve complex problems and mediate successful outcomes.
  • Experience with computers, databases, and software, including Microsoft Office.
  • Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment. Learner's licenses are not permitted.
