The opportunity we have available

The Domestic Aviation and Reform (DAR) Division is seeking motivated EL1 team members to support the implementation of the Government’s aviation reform agenda, as outlined in the recently released Aviation White Paper.

The Division is responsible for promoting an efficient, sustainable, safe, competitive air transport system. The Division stewards the domestic aviation sector by regulating airports, investing strategically in aviation services, and advising government on policy to serve Australia’s interests.

The Domestic Policy and Programs Branch provides policy advice to the Government on domestic aviation issues to help support Australia’s way of life. This includes undertaking domestic aviation sector industry intelligence and economic analysis; developing advice to Government on domestic aviation policy issues; and representing the department and Government at meetings with airlines, airports and other industry stakeholders.

In addition, the Branch administers a number of aviation programs that facilitate air connectivity to regional and remote airports and communities, as well as a program to help encourage girls and women to choose aviation as a career.

The Branch will play a critical role in implementing measures that will improve planning on and around airports and best practice approaches to minimising the impacts of aircraft noise, as set out in the recently released Aviation White Paper: Towards 2050. As an Assistant Director for this work program you will work on one or more of the following workstreams:

  • Working in coordination with the National Airports Safeguarding Advisory Group to update National Airport Safeguarding Framework (NASF) guidance on best-practice approaches for including aircraft noise exposure notifications on property titles for new developments, and preparing educational and training material on the NASF for local planning officials.
  • Working to develop guidance to pilots on ‘Flying Considerately’ to minimise noise impacts in residential areas, when operating under visual flight rules or outside of controlled airspace.
  • Updating guidelines for Community Aviation Consultation Groups to set out ministerial expectations for greater community input

Depending on your background and skills, you may also be involved in the design of amendments to legislation and regulations to implement related measures announced in the Aviation White Paper.

Assistant Directors will also be required to:

  • Support their Director in managing the strategic direction and workload of a team in line with relevant legislative, regulatory and governance frameworks.
  • Foster and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders across the sector.
