Work closely with stakeholders including the Northern Territory Government, local council, and Traditional Owner representative bodies, to assist in the transformation of Jabiru from a mining services town to a regional services and tourism hub for KNP and the West Arnhem Region.
Who we are
The Office of the Supervising Scientist (OSS) is a specialist scientific area within the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (Commonwealth). We are responsible for protecting the people and environment of the Alligator Rivers Region, including Kakadu National Park, from the effects of uranium mining. We conduct environmental research and monitoring around operating and rehabilitated uranium mining sites, participate in and oversee the regulatory process and develop standards and practices for environmental protection. The Jabiru Operations consist of the Jabiru Field Station team, a dynamic team of technical officers undertaking OSS research and monitoring programs and the Jabiru remediation team, a small agile team that works extensively with internal and external stakeholders to implement the Commonwealth’s commitment to the remediation of the Jabiru township post-mining.
The Job
This role will support the coordination and delivery of remediation projects that the Australian Government has responsibility for delivering in Jabiru. Specifically, this role will support and take a lead on remediation, contaminated land, natural resource management and infrastructure related projects, to ensure they are delivered to scope, schedule and budget.
The role will undertake work that is complex and/or sensitive in nature, you will be required to exercise both initiative and judgment in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures. You will provide detailed technical and professional advice in relation to complex problems and assist in strategic planning and program and project management. This role requires a considerable level of public contact in relation to difficult or sensitive issues, including liaison with a range of stakeholders in a joint management context.
The duties of this role within the Jabiru Remediation Team include:
- Managing and delivering complex projects or programs.
- Researching and interpreting technical assessments and reports and developing scope of works for projects.
- Liaising, consulting and negotiating with a range of internal and external stakeholders including Commonwealth and State/Territory governments, regional councils, indigenous corporations, consultants and contractors to facilitate the resolution of complex matters.
- Preparing draft reports, briefing papers, speeches, Ministerial correspondence and discussion papers for executive level employees.
- Participating in various committees, working groups and forums.
Note, the successful applicant must hold and maintain a valid Australian motor vehicle drivers licence.
What we are looking for
Knowledge and experience
The successful applicant will have some or all of the following experience:
- Experience in delivering or leading complex projects associated with contaminated site remediation, land management, infrastructure or planning related projects, managing project teams and participating in project governance process.
- Experience providing advice on issues and working with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate the resolution of complex policy, program, regulatory or coordination matters.
- Experience in policy or program development, including the ability to investigate and source key information to support decision making.
- Experience in management of resources, personnel and budgets as well as procurement, contract management, risk and milestone reporting.
- Knowledge of key government legislation, policies and strategies on land use planning, environmental science/natural resource management or public land management.

- Technical skills – Provide high level specialist technical and or professional advice and project management for remediation projects and the ability to research, review and evaluate specialist reports to develop project scopes.
- Leadership – ability to provide expertise in project coordination and delivery. Overseeing and analysing project outputs, aims and objectives monitoring progress and deliver quality outcomes.
- Collaboration - ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of stakeholders within the department and externally to build and sustain productive working relationships. Engage and collaborate with key stakeholders to deliver projects, achieve outcomes and manage expectations.
- Communication - ability to communicate clearly and concisely and with influence, both verbally and in writing, with the ability to convey complex issues succinctly through various communication products including briefs, reports, etc,
- Planning and organising – ability to assist in the development of project plans and work programs to support delivery of core functions of the team. High level organisational skills, with a pro-active approach to identifying and implementing improvements to work practices and systems.
- An ability to work independently, identify priorities, goals and objectives, and manage risks to deliver consistently high-quality outputs to meet targets and critical deadlines.
Mandatory qualifications
Knowledge or experience of project management related to remediation, capital works or construction projects
and/or
Tertiary or trade qualification or equivalent experience related to the role.
