Assistant Director, Automated Decision-Making Section - Executive Level 1

  • Salary: $114 780 to $139 657 plus 15.4% superannuation

Employment Opportunity
The Automated Decision-Making Section (ADM) is seeking an Assistant Director to lead tech policy development.

The ADM section is responsible for implementing a recommendation of the Robodebt Royal Commission Report to develop a consistent legislative framework for automated decision making in the delivery of government services.

The ADM Project is priority, high-profile work which would allow agencies to harness the efficiency benefits of automation while providing confidence that automated decisions are made lawfully and responsibly.

AGD is seeking an EL1 assistant director to lead tech policy development to ensure that legislative design is properly informed by technical considerations.

The role will involve consultation within Government and external stakeholders to examine important tech policy questions and intersection with related tech reforms such as AI and automation.

How you can help us make a difference
AGD is looking for a high-performing, curious and agile EL1 who can work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment to support the automated decision-making (ADM) project being led by the ADM Section.

Our ideal candidate will:

  • have excellent written and verbal communication skills with the capacity to convey complex concepts to diverse audiences
  • have experience working in a multi-disciplinary team and acting as a liaison between technical, policy, legal and other stakeholders to facilitate clear communication and effective collaboration
  • have the ability to think strategically and innovatively, with the capacity to examine, analyse and advise on complex technical and policy issues
  • have demonstrated understanding of the principles and methods used in automation, machine learning and artificial intelligence
  • be committed to continuous learning and have a proactive approach to developing skills and knowledge connected with emerging technologies
  • collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
  • be an agile and flexible team player who fosters positive team culture and capability
  • have experience or demonstrated understanding of the development or use of automated decision-making systems in a public sector context
  • have a strong understanding of the principles of Rules as Code

Other qualifications: Bachelor degree in Computer Science, computer programming, software engineering, machine learning or a related field (essential) and Legal qualification and/or expertise in administrative law (desirable).
