Student and Family Wellness Liaison

Mandan Public Schools is currently seeking to hire a Student and Family Wellness Liaison for the 2024-2025 school year. This position is full time and follows the school calendar. Full benefit package is included for employees working 30 or more hours/week.
Position Summary:
  • The Student and Family Wellness Liaison promotes and enhances the overall academic mission by providing services to district students and families that strengthen home, school, and community partnerships and alleviates barriers to learning and achievement. Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, the Family Liaison significantly contributes to the development of a healthy, safe, caring, and culturally respectful environment. Such an environment is achieved by advancing the understanding of the emotional and social development of children and the influences of family, community, and cultural differences on student success along with the implementation of effective intervention strategies.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Uses a variety of appropriate formal and informal tools and techniques including observations and interviews to consider the progress and performance of students and families.
  • Addresses the needs of the school, student, families, and community by collaborating to design a holistic approach to any barriers or problems with the educational process.
  • Uses knowledge and understanding of the reciprocal influences of home, school, and community to intervene for student success via such practices as: crisis intervention and response, home visits, conflict resolution, program development, dropout prevention, graduation awareness, and coordination of school and community services, and potentially facilitates skills-based groups.
  • Provides services to students in ways that build upon individual strengths and offers students maximum opportunities to participate in the planning and direction of their own learning experiences. Supports and encourages student and family involvement in the school process.
  • Assists students and their families in gaining access to formal and informal community resources.
  • Consults on such issues as attendance, diversity, mental health, behavior management, delinquency, crisis intervention, homelessness, child abuse, neglect, and the importance of confidentiality.
  • Initiates and supports activities to overcome institutional barriers and gaps in services as leaders and members of interdisciplinary teams with the unique contribution of bringing the home, school, and community perspectives to the interdisciplinary process.
  • Networks through multidisciplinary teams to improve service delivery. Encourages and models relationships that are critical to a rigorous and relevant education.
  • Provides a wide range of prevention, early intervention, and crisis response strategies to address social, emotional, psychological, and academic needs.
  • Collaborates with administrators, instructional and support staff, parents, and the community to develop programs or systems of care that support and enhance the learning, health, social and emotional well-being, and safety of students.
  • Maintains accurate records and documentation.
  • Maintains current knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations and abides by said laws and regulations with emphasis on persons with disabilities, child welfare, mental health, confidentiality, and student and parent rights.
  • Participates in appropriate professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills.
  • Provides professional development to promote early identification of unmet needs, increase awareness of relevant laws, policies, and procedures, and encourage empathy and understanding of the whole child.
  • Participates in all mandatory training or training appropriate to the position as required by the district and CLSD grant initiatives.
  • Attends school-requested student meetings e.g. Parent/Teacher conference, IEP meetings, and helps families fulfill mandated action items.
  • Works with parents to help them understand their role as a parent-educator in the home.
  • Collaborates with district and community partners to plan and implement family events.
  • Understands that this position is based upon the fluid needs of the district and may experience some shift in responsibilities to address those needs.
Reports To:
  • Alternative Education Director
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in behavioral science or related field from an accredited university. Must have a good understanding of human behavior; be familiar with legal issues, ethical issues, insurance regulations and protocols for proper referral or application for various programs. The incumbent must also be knowledgeable in medical care and emergency services. Training and experience in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services and chemical dependency treatment would be highly desirable.
License and Certification Requirements:
A valid North Dakota State Driver’s License may be required. Additional training and certifications may be required for some incumbents.

Pay: $59,581.00 - $65,405.00 per year
