Position Summary
Lead Excellence in Veterinary Surgery: Become Our Small Animal OR Supervisor!

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Colorado State University is looking for Small Animal Operating Room Supervisors to oversee our dynamic OR team. In this pivotal role, you’ll manage surgical operations, coordinate with top-tier veterinarians, and ensure the highest standards of care for our animal patients. If you’re an experienced veterinary professional with strong leadership skills and a commitment to surgical excellence, we want you to be the driving force behind our operating room success!

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) Small Animal Operating Room Supervisor is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and controlling activities within the Small Animal Operating Room. This includes oversight of all operations, personnel, and financial management of the area, and training of technical staff to ensure high quality, safe, and appropriate patient care. They foster an environment of collaboration and respect with faculty, staff, and students, and are responsible for efficient day to day operations of the unit. These responsibilities are assigned to two Small Animal Operating Room Supervisors that serve as support and backup for each other in order to provide necessary coverage and leadership within the department.

Required Job Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree in Veterinary Technology or a closely related field
  • 3 years of leadership or supervisory experience
  • 5 years of veterinary experience
  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or equivalent

Substitution:
  • A high school diploma or GED plus 2 years of relevant experience may substitute for the Associate’s degree, in addition to the required veterinary experience listed above.
NOTE: VETERINARY PRACTICE ACT – Effective January 1, 2024, anyone wanting to use the titles Registered Veterinary Technician, Veterinary Technician, RVT, or VT will have to be certified through the Colorado Association of Certified Veterinary Technicians (CACVT) AND registered through the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA). Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology or a closely related field
  • Experience working in a veterinary operating room with various specialties (General Surgery, Orthopedics, Oncology, Neurology, Cardiology, etc.), including an in-depth understanding of veterinary surgical techniques.
  • Proven ability to lead a team, including overseeing scheduling, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Direct experience as a scrub nurse, managing surgical instruments and supplies, and ensuring adherence to related policies and procedures.
  • Understanding of budgeting, cost management, and financial reporting related to operating room management.
  • Excellent communication skills to interact effectively with veterinarians, technicians, and other staff members.
  • Ability to work closely with a multidisciplinary team and foster a positive work environment
  • Flexibility and adaptability to handle the dynamic and sometimes unpredictable nature of veterinary surgery.

  • This position is responsible for leading the daily administrative functions in the Small Animal Operating Room with demonstrated expertise in surgical services and serves as a role model demonstrating effective patient care, leadership, and professional behavior.
  • As a clinical leader this position plans for and provides a staffing pattern which meets patient care needs, assists in communicating department/leadership decisions and policies to staff and faculty, facilitates the flow of information from faculty to nursing staff regarding patient care procedures and equipment, collaborates with faculty to support and guide student’s clinical experiences, and promotes open and objective communication within the surgery unit.
  • Personnel management responsibilities include recruiting and retaining staff members that are in congruence with service excellence, engaging in ongoing feedback to the effectiveness of staff members in their roles, and provide clinical learning opportunities for staff.
  • This position conducts annual reviews that foster mutual goal setting and performance feedback, initiates appropriate remediation and disciplinary process as needed, leads the recruitment and hiring process for the department, and manages staff timeclock/leave within the University system.

Duty/Responsibility
  • Administrates the day-to-day operations within the surgical suites and oversees assessment, planning, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of departmental workflow process. This position measures and monitors unit operational performance metrics inclusive of daily block schedule utilization, emergency case rate, departmental percent usage, and overall monthly utilization. This position must maintain current knowledge of and ensure compliance with regulatory and professional standards of care, uses creativity in developing quality/performance improvement programs and implementing enhanced standards. Maintains general overview of faculty surgeons and their needs, monitors efficient room turnover, demonstrates mentoring ability when interacting with staff or students, and supervises adherence to protocols and procedures. Works cooperatively/collaboratively with faculty to establish and maintain their practice and clinical requirements. In addition, this position serves as assistant to the faculty chair of the OR Governance committee. This includes working in tandem with the chair in establishing objectives for the committee, reviewing compliance issues, as well as coordinating and documenting quarterly meetings.
  • This position oversees the financial management of the operating rooms including monitoring monthly departmental financial reports, analyzing trends and taking appropriate action as needed, implementing cost containment strategies, and educating staff on their role in controlling expenses. It performs creation, management and analysis of costs per procedure, product revenue margins, and overhead expenses, as well as participates in annual capital equipment requests. To support financial decision making this position performs regular cost accounting exercises, biannual usage fee and sterilization expense evaluations, and quarterly cost comparison of all OR products. This position also provides oversight to the procurement and maintenance of equipment and supplies, serves as a liaison to the surgical sections regarding financial elements that affect overall budget of the section, develops and maintains effective relationships with departments providing support services, and collaborates on methods to improve financial efficiency.

Duty/Responsibility
  • Serves as a critical part of the surgical team to ensure that patients are well cared for during surgery. Perioperative nursing responsibilities include thorough set up of the OR establishing that all supplies are readily available, performing the surgical safety checklist at all designated points in the process, positioning and aseptic preparation of the patient, management of all circulating nursing duties throughout the duration of the procedure, and cleaning of the OR suite between cases. This position also takes on specialty surgical scrub nursing duties as needed for General Surgery, Oncology, and Orthopedics.
  • In addition to traditional perioperative nursing duties, this position is responsible for instructing professional Veterinary Medical students, residents, interns, and veterinary technician students on aseptic and/or sterile technique, education on equipment and instrumentation, and observes the team from a wide perspective to ensure overall appropriate aseptic and sterile technique is maintained during the procedure.

  • This position is responsible for the maintenance and coordination of the surgical supply system ensuring that it operates in a fiscally responsible manner and manages supplies and equipment from acquisition to disposition. Provides support and training to all clinical operators on the correct setup and operation of patient care equipment.
  • Serves as the contact for internal and external customers in relation to the Small Animal Operating Room equipment/instrumentation and follows up with all work performed or scheduled.
  • Also responsible for coordinating and scheduling time for equipment to be maintained and/or repaired by either the in-house biomedical technician or outside vendors as needed. This position requests, receives, and assimilates unique items (loaned equipment), replacement parts, and urgently needed items.
  • They manage equipment recalls, oversee technician management of the daily surgical stock list, as well as meet with vendor representatives to become aware of new opportunities to improve patient care, find cost savings, and improve staff safety.
  • Makes capital equipment recommendations based on current equipment needs, and repair costs of existing equipment.
  • Assists clinical staff with equipment purchases, including receiving, set-up, cost accounting, and training schedules for new equipment used in the department (operating room tables, lights, electrosurgery units, fluoroscopy, power equipment, etc.).
  • Uses proper procedures to surplus retired equipment and is responsible for annual inventory of capital assets
