RN, Intermediate Care

The Intermediate Care Unit specializes in the care of patients with a variety of acute and chronic disease processes, including pulmonary, neurological, renal, geriatric, and infectious disease. Many of the patients are stepping down from the intensive care unit but still require increased nursing supervision. Other patients require an increased level of care after an unstable event occurs on a general medical-surgical floor or they are transferring from an outside facility that cannot treat their acuity level.

  • Location: Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center - Winston-Salem, NC
  • Patient Population: The general surgical population of the unit includes patients that have undergone emergent abdominal resections, gastrointestinal bleeds and repairs, numerous orthopedic injuries, falls, motor vehicle accidents, gunshot wounds, and head injuries. The medical population of the unit includes patients with diabetes mellitus on insulin drips, those requiring frequent monitoring and blood work, medication titration, ventilator management, and weaning.

What You’ll Need
  • Graduation from accredited School of Nursing; BSN preferred.
  • Registered Nurse licensure from the State of North Carolina Board of Nursing
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) required
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required within 1 year of hire, per unit guidelines
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within 1 year of hire, per unit guidelines
Job Responsibilities (Not Limited To)
  • Patient/Family Centered Care: Provide patient/family centered care using the nursing process and focusing on the physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural, religious, and environmental needs. This includes providing for the assessment, development of nursing diagnoses, outcome identification, planning, implementation of interventions, coordination of care, health teaching and promotion and evaluation of goals and interventions consistent with the policies of WFBMC.
  • Safe, Therapeutic, and Healing Environment: Maintains a safe, therapeutic, and healing environment through ensuring patient privacy and responsive, respectful, accepting, and professional behavior.
  • Technology Utilization: Utilizes and promotes the use of technology and equipment to enhance the safety of patients and staff.
  • Effective Communication: Communicates effectively to promote sharing of information throughout the continuum of care and as an effective member of the healthcare team.
  • Professional Growth and Accountability: Demonstrates the ability to function in a professional setting through active participation in a professional practice model. This includes participating in shared governance, adherence to standards of care, participation in peer review and professional development promoting leadership and clinical excellence, effective team skills, autonomous practice and acknowledgment of accountability for actions and critical thinking.
  • Point-of-care Testing: Performs and maintains competency for point-of-care testing as assigned, waived and or non-waived, ensuring compliance with WFBH policies and with applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Patient Advocacy: Act as a passionate patient advocate throughout the continuum of care, advocating for their needs and preferences in all patient settings, including the community.
  • Care Management and Clinical Prioritization : Coordinate the effective and efficient delivery of patient care services by applying care management principles. Identify clinical priorities and initiate action to continuously improve patient outcomes.
  • Promotion of Healthy Work Environment: Demonstrates ability to function in a professional practice model through active participation in shared governance, promotion of a healthy work environment and acceptance of personal responsibility for professional growth.
