Phlebotomist and Specimen Collector

Tribal Diagnostics is searching for a full-time Phlebotomist is Bartlesville. The hours are Monday through Friday from 8am - 5pm. The position also requires 2 half days in Chelsea. Mileage is paid.
Job Summary:
The Phlebotomist and Specimen Collector holds a vital role within healthcare settings, responsible for the precise collection of blood, urine, and saliva samples from patients. This position plays a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of specimens used for diagnostic testing. By following established protocols and maintaining strict safety and quality standards, the Phlebotomist and Specimen Collector contribute to the provision of accurate healthcare information, ultimately aiding in patient diagnosis and treatment. Strong communication skills and patient-centered care are fundamental to this role, as is a commitment to confidentiality and ethical practices.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures on patients of all ages using aseptic techniques.
  • Ensure proper patient identification and specimen labeling for blood samples.
  • Collect urine specimens following established protocols, ensuring proper labeling and documentation.
  • Instruct patients on the collection process and provide necessary containers.
  • Collect saliva samples using swabs or other approved methods with attention to accuracy and patient comfort.
  • Educate patients on proper saliva sample collection procedures.
  • Greet patients warmly, explain specimen collection procedures, and address any concerns.
  • Provide exceptional customer service, ensuring patients' comfort and well-being during the collection process.
  • Process and prepare collected specimens for laboratory testing, ensuring proper storage and transportation.
  • Follow safety protocols, infection control measures, and relevant regulations to ensure patient and staff safety.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information and records.
  • Accurately document patient information, collection details, and test requisitions for all collected specimens.
  • Process referrals and complete Prior Authorizations when needed.
  • Follow up on missing or incorrect information so patients receive the right reimbursement from insurance companies.
  • Perform routine maintenance of phlebotomy and specimen collection equipment.
  • Report equipment issues promptly for repairs.
  • Clean restrooms and take out trash as needed.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a phlebotomy training program or certification from an accredited institution.
  • State phlebotomy certification or licensure may be required, depending on location.
  • Proven experience as a phlebotomist and specimen collector is a plus.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work accurately in a fast-paced environment.
  • Compassion and a patient-centric approach.

Physical Requirements:
  • Phlebotomists should have the physical ability to stand and move for extended periods, as they often work in a clinical or laboratory setting where they need to move between patient rooms or workstations.
  • Precise hand-eye coordination is essential for performing venipuncture and capillary punctures. Phlebotomists need good dexterity to handle needles and other equipment with precision.
  • Phlebotomists must have sufficient upper body strength to perform venipuncture, especially for patients with difficult veins. They may need to apply slight pressure during the procedure.
  • The job can be physically demanding, requiring the ability to maintain focus and steady hands during repetitive tasks, sometimes for extended periods.
  • Good vision is critical for accurately identifying patient information and veins. Corrective lenses, if needed, should be worn to ensure precise work.
  • Adequate hearing is necessary to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues. It's essential for understanding patient concerns or requests.
  • Phlebotomists must have excellent manual dexterity to handle needles, vials, and other equipment safely and accurately.
  • The ability to differentiate colors is important when working with blood and specimen containers, as they may be color-coded for identification.
