Every day after school, the
L.A.C.E.R. Afterschool Programs
provide middle school students with free opportunities in the arts, academics, and athletics. Our middle school programs are in four Los Angeles public schools, and the program serves over 1,000 students with a team of instructors, artists, coaches, and volunteers. The services L.A.C.E.R. provides make a significant difference for the families we serve. 84% are economically disadvantaged and do not have access to the high-quality programming L.A.C.E.R. specializes in, such as visual and performing arts, mathematics and English Language tutoring, college and career preparation, and organized sports for girls and boys. The L.A.C.E.R. programs began in 1995 and they are supported by Federal, State, City, and County funds, as well as Private Corporations, Foundations, and individual donors. L.A.C.E.R. also partners with other non-profits to provide specialized classes and opportunities to our student community.
Title: Middle School Homework Tutor Reports to: Program Director Job Status: Non-exempt Part-time position; must be available to work 5 days a week. Pay rate: $22.00 - $24.00 per hour Hours: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. and, on Mondays, from 1:45 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The total hours-per-week is 16.5 hours. is a nonprofit organization, which provides middle school youth with an arts and literacy-based after-school program that includes academic support, enrichment activities and sports in a safe and caring environment.
Our goals are: o To teach students to respect themselves, their peers, their elders, their schools, and their community. o To provide homework assistance and opportunities to improve mathematical and literacy skills and acquire a love of learning. o To provide new experiences, especially in the arts, with workshops, classes, and educational field trips. o To provide students recreational opportunities aimed at developing teamwork on and off the field, as well as introducing healthy lifestyle choices. o To provide caring adults who serve as role models. Position Summary The middle school youth leader is responsible for providing daily tutoring and homework assistance in all academic subjects in the L.A.C.E.R. Afterschool Programs. Assist with planning fun and engaging activities for students. Daily Tasks · Provide daily homework assistance · Teach study skills · Utilize varied and creative teaching methods · Establish and maintain good rapport with all students · Work individually and/or in groups for tutoring all subjects · Serve as a positive role model for student participants · Provide additional homework materials and/or educational activities to students · Assist with outreach and recruitment within the day-school student body Qualifications

Experience: One to two years experience tutoring youth ages 10-14 years- old is preferred.

Education/Knowledge: At least two years of college (or equivalent) or a bachelor’s degree. Major course work in a STEAM area (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics), or Education, Human Services, Social Services, and related fields.

Skills and Abilities: Strong mathematics skills in Algebra-1 and Geometry, and in all other Middle School subject areas. Strong supervisory skills. Ability to relate well to diverse individuals and to be flexible and open to new ideas. Driven by creativity and ability to deliver a consistently high quality of service to the students that L.A.C.E.R. serves.
