Mentor Specialist - Marin City

Improve Your Tomorrow, Inc. (IYT) is a college access and completion organization focused on increasing the number of young men of color to attend and graduate from colleges and universities. IYT’s vision is a nation where young men of color are overrepresented in higher education, underrepresented in the criminal justice system and are leaders in their communities. IYT is an Ameri Corps partner organization serving 3,000+ members across more than 60 sites in Sacramento County, Humboldt, Central Valley, Bay Area and college students across the nation.


Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Mentor Specialist will provide on-site mentorship and educational services for young men of color attending middle school and high schools in the Marin City area.


Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Lead Mentor for multiple campuses, maintaining one on one and small group mentoring sessions for students with the goal being to provide academic, emotional, and mental support (mentorship)
  • Assist in the out of class activities and program offerings as needed
  • Support and/or conduct Saturday and off-site programming, college tours and workshops
  • Participate in monthly professional development sessions
  • Organize, input and maintain student data through salesforce
  • Deliver or Present student development workshops (including college advising, civic engagement, life skills, etc.)
  • Provide a space for individuals and groups for academic support
  • Support Program Managers on/off-site as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Desired Qualifications
  • Believe in the mission, vision and values of Improve Your Tomorrow, Inc.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 1-2 years required working directly with young men of color, preferably in an academic setting.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) with demonstrated ability to speak and write clearly and persuasively
  • Strong interpersonal skills that inspire and motivate others to action


Schedule
Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5pm, some weekends, evenings and organization-wide events are required.


Compensation

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a pay rate of $18-$20 per hour commensurate with experience. This position is grant funded and is contingent per the availability of funds and resources.


Work Location

This position is based in Marin City and will require travel between multiple campuses on a weekly basis. Reliable transportation is required.


Requirement

Clearance from background checks is required for employment, with fingerprinting expense covered by employer.
