SUMMARY
Incumbents in this classification are temporary or seasonal employees for the Department of Youth & Family Development. Employment periods may range from one (1) to three (3) months.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Essential Functions : (Duties will vary within the area of assignment.)
Aquatics Lifeguard 1: Supervises pool facilities with priority given to the safety of patrons. Have appropriate knowledge and skills necessary to help prevent and respond to emergencies, complete reports and required maintenance. Must be comfortable working independently with minimal supervision.
Lifeguard 2: Supervise pool facilities with priority given to the safety of patrons. Enforce water safety rules, rescue persons in distress, perform first aid and CPR as needed, complete records and required maintenance. Must be comfortable working independently with minimal supervision.
Lifeguard 3: Supervise pool facilities with priority given to the safety of patrons. Enforce water safety rules, rescue persons in distress, perform first aid and CPR as needed, complete reports and required maintenance.
Head Guard: Manage day to day operations of pool facilities with priority given to the safety of patrons. Enforce water safety rules, rescue persons in distress, perform first aid and CPR as needed, complete reports and required maintenance.
Crew Worker 1 (Custodial): performs assorted public works duties such as sweeping sidewalks and streets, blowing and raking leaves and collecting/picking up brush, garbage and recycling materials. May participate in seasonal work such as ice and snow removal. May perform various duties in the cleaning and maintenance of various City facilities, building and landscapes including cleaning restrooms, sweeping, mopping, cleaning various types of flooring including terrazzo, tile, rubber and cork, vacuuming, carpet cleaning, operating specialized cleaning equipment, washing windows, removing trash and litter, mowing grass, operating leaf blower to removes from various structures/landscapes, weeding, mulching and trimming of plants/shrubbery. May operate various hand and power tools requiring no special training or skill. Performs other duties as assigned.
Crew Worker 2 (Ballfieds):Performs various tasks associated with grounds/roadside maintenance activities such as mowing/cutting grass, trimming/edging landscaped areas, cleaning grounds, planting/cultivating flower beds and landscaped areas, pruning tress/shrubbery, irrigating greenery, sweeping sidewalks and streets, storing hoses, cleaning out ditches, picking up trash/debris, blowing/raking leaves, removing brush/tree limbs from wooded areas and roadside areas. Maintains and repairs park buildings and facilities; lines softball and football fields according to league regulations; cleans park building and facilities; repairs playground equipment; transports tables/chairs and sets up for events. Operates or assists in operating a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in department activities which may include an air compressor, tamp, vibrator, generator, metal detector, drill, grade laser, construction level, rivet gun, voltage meter, gauges, wash rack, mower, weed eater, brush ax, pick ax, sledgehammer, shovel, mechanic tools, hands tools or power tools. Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, buildings and tools in operable condition which may include inspecting equipment, refueling vehicles, equipment, checking fluid/oil levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, sweeping/mopping floors, washing windows, cleaning bathrooms, changing light bulbs, repairing fixtures and cleaning faulty equipment. Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals. Communication via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for services or assistance. May be required to use, carry and answer their call phone as determined by their job duties and the department head. Performs other duties as assigned.
Aquatic Program Temp: Enforces regulations, meets, greets and assists customers, ensures cleanliness of pool desk, splash pad and adjoining areas, sets-up for recreational and aquatic activities, reports unsafe features and events in splash pad area (including hazards and guest injuries), and checks the safety of all areas and facilities.
Chattanooga Ambassador Program (CAP) Workers: CAP is a leadership and character-building initiative involving work training in areas such as communications, team-building, recreation and program support activities, assisting with set-up and operations of technology, and supporting younger children in homework. Program Cycle: 48 weeks (February - January). Active students receive 10 hours per week of work training during the school year.
Kids Camp; Summer Camp Counselor: Overseeing a wide variety of daily recreational events, preparing rosters; setting up recreation site; monitoring events and/or performing other related activities; checking site for potential safety hazards; responds to requests for information over the phone and in person regarding recreation summer programs; registers participants for team sports; may be required to use, carry and answer their cell phone as determined by their job duties and the department head; performs other duties as assigned. Recreational sites include: Community Recreational Centers Fitness Centers Therapeutic [Recreational] Centers Skate Park Champion's Club Summer Camp
Van Driver: Responsible for safely transporting youth summer participants to and from YFD centers to various locations involved with summer camp. Accountable for ensuring all kids are accounted for before leaving any area. May be responsible for delivery of food to YFD centers.
Site Monitor: Serve as a direct link between the City of Chattanooga and actual food service sites; train site personnel as necessary; supply all necessary forms to site personnel; ensure sites maintain adequate records and program is operating in accordance with the requirements; visit sites as required and document visits and meal services; ensure safety regulations and procedures are adhered to; ensure food and hygiene regulations are followed; other duties as assigned.
Sports - Umpire, Referee and Scorekeeper (Officials): Referee/officiate games; performing neutral, and never make biased decisions for a team; should behave in a good manner with all players of the game; communicates with other sporting officials, coaches, facility managers, subordinates or the public by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person in order to provide information, coordinate activities and discuss problems; inspects sporting equipment and/or examine participants in order to ensure compliance with event and safety regulations; signals participant or other officials to make them aware of infractions or to otherwise regulate play; maintains control of players, coaches and spectators; explains disputed calls to players and coaches; taking regular trainings to be aware of latest technology and rule updates of a game; attend all required meetings and trainings; enforce all sports rules and policies; set up the activity area at the beginning of games if needed; examine the playing surface before every game to ensure safe playing conditions; use appropriate signals and mechanics; maintain a high level of sportsmanship, and penalize unsporting behavior; communicate any problems or concerns to the supervisor; maintain all CYFD sports equipment; break down the activity area and put equipment up at the end of games if needed; communicate any problems and/or concerns to supervisory staff on hand;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS All positions: Must be able to pass a background check to work with children. Must be able to work when needed. Aquatics Lifeguard 1: Must possess current American Red Cross, YMCA along with Standard First Aid and American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer including AED or the equivalent from the American Heart Association. Must be a minimum of 15 years of age. Possess effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to understand and follow through with directions. Lifeguard 2: Must have a current American Red Cross, YMCA, along with Standard First Aid and American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer including AED or the equivalent from the American Heart Association. Must be at least 16 years of age. Possess effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to understand and follow through with directions. Lifeguard 3: Must have a current American Red Cross, YMCA, along with Standard First Aid and American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer including AED or the equivalent from the American Heart Association. Must be at least 18 years of age. Possess effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to understand and follow through with directions. Lifeguard Head: Must have a current American Red Cross, YMCA along with Standard First Aid and American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer including AED or the equivalent from the American Heart Association. Must be at least 18 years old. Must have at least three years of prior experience as a Lifeguard 3. Prior pool management or supervision experience preferred. Possess written and verbal communication skills and the ability to understand and follow through with directions. Aquatic Program Temp: Must be at least 15 years of age, and be able to work varied shifts during weekdays, weekends and holidays. CPR and First Aide Certifications are preferred. Chattanooga Ambassador Program CAP Workers: Must be an active student, and be interviewed through their school and at the Recreation Administrative Offices. A total of thirty (300 students will be selected for the program cycle. KIDS CAMP: The Counselor must be a minimum of 18 years of age and a high school graduate. He or She must be old enough to have maturity of judgment in everyday situations. The Counselor should have a lot of patience, customer service skills, and leadership skills. Must have the ability to obtain First Aid/CPR Certification or certifications specific to area of assignment. KIDS CAMP VAN DRIVER: The driver must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have a valid TN driver's license. He or she must be old enough to have maturity of judgments in everyday situations. Site Monitor: Must be at least 18 years old. Must understand program requirements including civil rights requirements. At least 1 year of experience in a monitoring role. Sports: Must be at least 14 years of age. Must have knowledge about games being officiated. Must have good communication and public relation skills. Must be responsible and reliable. Also must be able to attend all required meetings and trainings. Licensing and Certifications : None. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION Knowledge and Skills : Knowledge and Skills are dependent upon position.
