Job Title: Life Support Systems Technician Department: Marine Operations Reports To: Special Projects Director FLSA Status: Exempt Position Overview: The Life Support Systems Technician is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the life support systems for all aquatic exhibits, including those housing sea lions. This includes the operation and maintenance of water filtration systems, pumps, and other equipment to ensure a safe and healthy environment for the animals. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.
Operate and maintain all life support systems, including seawater intake pumps, sand filters, ozone systems, and UV sterilizers.
Perform daily inspections and preventive maintenance on all life support systems and associated equipment.
Troubleshoot and repair faulty life support systems, including pumps, filtration systems, and control systems.
Monitor water quality parameters and make adjustments as necessary to maintain optimal conditions for the animals.
Assist with the design and installation of new life support systems and upgrades to existing systems.
Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, water quality parameters, and system performance.
Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations regarding water quality and animal care.
Work closely with the animal care team to ensure the health and well-being of the sea lions and other aquatic animals.
Participate in emergency response procedures for life support system failures or other critical situations.
Support general work in the special projects department.
Work successfully with vendors and manufacturers to complete purchases and repairs.
Can work independently and manage schedules and plans for preventative maintenance.
Qualifications:
Experience with LSS equipment or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required work skills, knowledge, and ability to perform this job.
Previous aquatic animal life support experience in a private or public aquarium is highly desirable.
Completion of AALSO Certification, bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent experience.
Open-Water SCUBA Certification and comfortable working underwater, or ability to get certified upon hire.
Electrical, PVC Plumbing, light carpentry skills
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong communication and organizational skills.
Must be able to work in the U.S.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional environment (indoor and outdoor). The employee will be exposed to sunny, warm, humid, and wet conditions.
This role routinely uses standard equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, file cabinets, etc.
