The Information Technology Services Office within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill an IT Customer Support - Journey position. This position is located in our Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.

As a Help Desk Technician on our team, you will play a crucial role in providing primary technical support to our Ecology business customers. In this position, you will troubleshoot and resolve a wide range of technical issues for end users, while contributing to the agency’s efforts to adopt and implement innovative technologies. You will have the opportunity to learn and work with emerging technologies and gain valuable project experience through various Ecology IT initiatives, making your role both dynamic and impactful. Your contributions will help enhance operational efficiency and support the agency's mission of environmental stewardship.

The Information Technology Services Office’s (ITSO) mission is to create and support useful technology services that are adaptable and support Ecology’s mission. ITSO’s mission is realized by focusing on the following strategic objectives and outcomes:

  • Managing agency systems to ensure confidentiality, integrity, and availability by evaluating business need, cyber threats, risk, and maintainability so that agency data is accurate and reliable.
  • Leading enterprise data management: promote agency defined data standards and industry best practices, architect technical systems integrations, and provide technical support for hardware and software tools, allowing the agency to make data driven decisions.

Telework options for this position:
This position provides in-person support and is expected to work in the office at least three days per week. This position has the option of a hybrid schedule, empowering work from home two days a week and in the office three days, providing less time in traffic and shrinking your carbon footprint.

Duties




What makes this role unique?
In this position, you will engage with a diverse group of customers within the state environment, each with varying levels of technical expertise, to resolve a wide range of technical issues. You will join a collaborative support team that works together to take on complex challenges and deliver effective solutions.

What you will do:
  • Diagnose and Resolve Issues: Quickly identify and troubleshoot technical problems to provide timely solutions for users.
  • Communicate Effectively: Clearly explain technical issues and solutions to users of varying technical expertise, ensuring understanding and satisfaction.
  • Document Tickets: Accurately log all support requests, resolutions, and relevant user information in the ticketing system for future reference and reporting.
  • Prioritize Tickets: Assess the urgency and impact of support requests to prioritize work effectively and ensure critical issues are addressed first.
  • Provide Training and Guidance: Educate users on software and hardware best practices, enhancing their ability to troubleshoot minor issues independently.
  • Collaborate with Teams: Work closely with other IT departments to escalate complex issues and share knowledge, fostering a cooperative support environment.
  • Follow Up: Ensure customer satisfaction by following up on resolved tickets to confirm that issues have been fully addressed.
  • Stay Updated: Continuously learn about new technologies, tools, and procedures through training to continually improve support effectiveness and adapt to changing user needs.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:

  • 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
  • 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent

Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, education, and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.

A total of three (3) years of experience and/or education as described below:
  • Experience within the last five years in application software/system testing, installing and/or maintaining computers software or hardware, providing direct customer technical support in IT.
    • Experience must include one (1) year of experience installing computer operating systems AND one (1) year of experience installing and supporting office productivity software.
  • Education: College credits or degree involving a major study in Computer Science, Information Technology (IT), or closely related field; OR completion of a Comp TIA, A+, or related certification.
