Position Summary: Legal Aid seeks a full-time Paralegal to work in the Greensboro Office, which provides free legal assistance in civil matters to low-income clients in Davidson, Guilford, Montgomery, Randolph, Rockingham, and Rowan counties. The ideal candidate will have experience serving low-income people as a paralegal and will have a four-year degree in paralegal studies or a related filed. Candidates without a four-year degree who have relevant work experience as a paralegal, or a related field will also be considered. Job Description: The Paralegal will:
Handle a broad variety of tasks that facilitate the team’s mission of effective, high quality legal services in landlord-tenant law
Interview applicants to gather facts and determine eligibility for services
Perform conflict checks
Obtain necessary documents from applicants and third parties as necessary
Create and maintain case files
Input date into the Legal Server case management system
Draft documents and letters
Perform legal research
Investigate cases
Provide general support to attorneys
Communicate effectively with applicants, clients, and office staff
Provide information about services and make appropriate referrals.
Maintain client confidentiality
Participate in community education and outreach
Provide direct legal services to clients under the supervision of an attorney.
Coordinate with the Managing or Supervising Attorney to provide information requested by funders.
Qualifications: Candidates applying for this position should have the following qualifications:
Associate or bachelor’s degree, preferably in paralegal studies or a related field.
A passion to serve low-income clients
A commitment to the mission and values of Legal Aid of North Carolina.
A commitment to, appreciation for and understanding of organizational values around social justice, diversity, equity and inclusion
Good communication skills
Ability to work efficiently, cooperatively, and professionally with team members.
Excellent organizational skills
Self-motivated with the proven ability to set goals and meet self-imposed and external deadlines
Strong writing and oral communication skills
Prior legal services experience is a plus
Bilingual language ability is a plus
Salary and Employee Benefits: The salary range for this position starts at $38,000 and will be commensurate with the candidate’s competencies and experience. Legal Aid of North Carolina provides excellent health, retirement, disability, and leave benefits. Employee medical, vision, dental, and life insurance premiums are covered at 100% by the employer. Discretionary 401(k) contributions with no match required. Paid leave includes 1.75 days per month (21 leave days in the first two years; 30 days in subsequent years), 12 paid holidays, two floating holidays, and other paid leave.
