General Statement of Duties

Performs a variety of routine and moderately complex diagnostic work on electrical and electronic equipment and accessories installed and used in the Division of Fire’s apparatus; installs, repairs and replaces various electrical and electronic equipment and accessories in the Division’s apparatus; performs related work as required
Essential Duties
Reports to the Fleet Lieutenant and assists with a variety of tasks relating to Fire Shop operations including driving apparatus to/ from repair shops, picking up parts, and basic installations of equipment on fire apparatus and other vehicles.
Examples of Primary Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities:
- Installs and replaces accessories on fire apparatus including but not limited to mounting brackets for hose, tools, air packs, fire extinguishers, etc.
- Works with various external vendors and suppliers, repairs shops and the County’s CAM Shop for parts, repairs, and service.
- Safely drives and operates all types of fire apparatus including ladder trucks, engines, ambulances, heavy rescue units, brush trucks and light vehicles to shuttle apparatus between repair vendors and fire stations.
- Collaborates with outside vendors and suppliers for the manufacture and supplying of custom apparatus parts.
- Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external vendors throughout all phases of apparatus repair activity.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) Typically Required:
- Ability to safely drive and operate all types of fire apparatus.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude, able to use basic hand tools, basic 12v electrical knowledge, sound computer skills with the ability to research and locate parts, supplies, accessories, etc. needed to perform assigned duties.
- Communicate effectively with all levels of Division staff, excellent collaborative skills; works effectively independently, as part of a team and with CAM and suppliers as needed.
- Consistently uses sound judgment in troubleshooting and diagnosing root causes of apparatus, accessory or other equipment related malfunctions and in determining whether to repair or replace.
- Non-supervisory. Requires an uncompromising commitment to safety and protocols for own and others’ safety.
- Works in and drives to/from the Division’s shop, fire stations and various other locations based on assigned duties, exposed to hazardous physical conditions such as moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, etc., atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, occasionally works under adverse temperatures and/or weather conditions.
- Performs physically demanding work when needed including, but not limited to heavy lifting and physical exertion.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school. Previous experience driving and operating fire apparatus and commonly equipped accessories and 12v systems; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Additional Information
Valid unrestricted driver's license and completion of the emergency Vehicle Operator's Course (EVOC), or valid CDL.
