Engineering Technician 1 - Starting salary is $12.22/hourly
Engineering Technician 2 - Starting salary is $14.00/hourly
Engineering Technician 3 - Starting salary is $16.03/hourly
Engineering Technician 4 - Starting salary is $18.35/hourly



Premium Pay - for every hour worked:

Engineering Technician 1-4 $2.00/Hour

Job Duties & Responsibilities:



25% Carefully reviews plans, specifications and special provision to ensure compliance by contractors. Compiles field data, work reports, and other information as needed to prepare estimates and periodic reports. Makes detailed calculation to determine areas and volume for roadway and structural items.



25% Interprets plans, specifications, and special provisions to ensure compliance by the contractor. Keeps field notes, record work performed in site manager, computes and checks earthwork quantities, cross section, excel spreadsheets, bench marks and other related data to determine that specifications have been met.



25% Performs detailed construction inspection of road and bridge projects and ensures that construction meets the guidelines detailed in the plans, specifications, and special provisions. Accurately reports data and figures for partial and final pay estimates.



20% Inform supervisors in a timely manner of any construction related issues that may arise during construction.



5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a high school diploma or GED.

SUBSTITUTIONS:
Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance will substitute for the high school diploma or GED.


Job Concepts
Function of Work:
To participate in on-the-job training to learn basic, routine sub professional engineering tasks, as defined in the Examples Of Work Section.

Level of Work:
Entry.

Supervision Received:
Close from an Engineering Technician 5, 6, 7, a professional engineer or manager of the agency served.

Supervision Exercised:
None.

Location of Work:
May be used by all state agencies.

Job Distinctions:
Differs from higher level engineering technicians by the focus on learning basic methods, techniques and procedures and by the presence of detailed instructions and close supervision.

Examples of Work
BRIDGE DESIGN:
Learns basic procedures of utilizing Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) to develop simple details required in plan preparation.

Learns basic drafting skills and techniques. Performs basic math computations and measurements. Becomes familiar with procedures, rules and regulations.

CONTRACT SERVICES:
Scans completed bid/contract documents into Visual Info. Performs final quantity checks on all bid items prior to each letting.

Assists in the distribution of construction proposals and plans to prospective bidders by entering pertinent data into the computerized bid system. Learns to verify license numbers and check for disqualified contractors. Assists with the maintenance of TOPS (Tracking of Projects System).

Performs final quantity checks on all bid items prior to each letting. Distributes various documents within and outside of the Department. Archives completed construction bid proposals and contract documents into Visual Info.

DATA COLLECTION & ANALYSIS:
Assists higher level technicians in collecting and extracting short session traffic volume and vehicle classification field data. Assists in the development of a daily work plan to install and remove the recorders from assigned monitoring sites.

Learns to digitize and create transportation-related features using field collected data, aerial and satellite imagery and other GIS data sets. Learns to perform accuracy checks and quality control of data and edits data to produce various maps and graphic products.

DISTRICTS:
Performs routine inspection tasks such as writing haul tickets, weighing asphaltic materials, assisting in asphalt plant inspections. Collects and totals quantities from haul tickets for materials delivered by truck to construction projects.

Becomes familiar with Department procedures, policies, standards and specifications as relate to the processing of construction-related documents such as partial and final estimates, test reports, and materials audits (2059); assists higher-level technicians in a Project or District Laboratory Engineer's office engaged in these tasks.

Assists the District Laboratory field crew in handling augers, taking routine samples, and maintaining equipment.

Assists more senior inspectors with measurements or field tests. Assists more senior inspectors in conducting bridge inspections.

Makes concrete cylinders.

Plots and drafts engineering/surveying drawings using personal computer and drafting software.

Serves as rod-person/prism person in land survey crew. Loads/unloads, cleans and maintains survey equipment.

Conducts traffic counts, speed studies and general data collection.

LOCATION AND SURVEY:
Trains on basic photo-interpretation instruments.

Assists with indexing photography.

Becomes familiar with and begins to utilize Computer Assisted Design and Drafting (CADD) software to create drawings.

Becomes familiar with surveying equipment, field terminology and Department/Section procedures.

MAINTENANCE:
Learns basic computer skills to be used in the processing of bridge reports from District Headquarters.

Learns basic procedures of the inventory and inspection database system for the in-service bridges on and off the state system.

MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS:
Trains in the use of existing data collection and data review equipment so as to contribute to the verification of the completeness and quality of pavement and bridge condition data.

Acquires specialized skills in PCs and other pavement/bridge management technical equipment through course work and on-the-job training.

MATERIALS TESTING:
Learns basic testing procedures and operation of testing equipment for quality assurance testing of construction and maintenance materials such as soils, aggregate, asphalt binders, geo-textiles, cement, metals, soil additives, etc.

Learns basic testing equipment repair procedures and techniques.

Performs data entry of test data into the statewide automated testing system.

Performs basic mathematical calculations to determine material properties.

Learns basic sampling procedures and operation of drilling equipment for obtaining deep soil boring samples.

Performs a limited range of assignments such as loading and unloading vehicles for travel to and from job sites, handling drilling stems, preparing bentonite slurries and basic maintenance of equipment.

PUBLIC WORKS AND WATER RESOURCES:
Assists in preparing Advisory Permit responses to government agencies that grant permits. Prepares correspondence from the Water Resources Permit Advisory Unit for mailing. Assists in maintaining Permit Records by means of manual filing and Automated Document Management.

Assists with water dam safety inspections, well registration, licensing forms, and data collection/input. Assists in the review of requests for right-of-way submitted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

RESEARCH:
Conducts basic engineering research tests in area of expertise under direct supervision of lead worker/engineer supervisor team to support specific research tasks and studies.

Learns basic field and laboratory techniques and procedures to enhance safety and knowledge.

ROAD DESIGN:
Serves in a training capacity, learning basic procedures of utilizing Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) to develop simple details required in plan preparation.

Learns basic drafting skills, techniques and basic math computations. Obtains training in computer-aided drafting, basic road design detailing and related computer applications.

TRAFFIC ENGINEERING AND SERVICES:
Becomes familiar with and begins to utilize CADD software to create drawings; obtains training in CADD, basic road design detailing and related computer applications. Learns basic drafting skills, techniques and basic math computations.

Conducts traffic counts, speed studies and general data collection.

Learns basic testing procedures and operation of testing equipment for quality assurance testing of construction and maintenance. Learns basic sampling procedures for testing traffic marking and sign sheeting materials.

TRANSPORTATION PLANNING AND SAFETY:
Learns to prepare computerized Crash History Data reports. Learns to review Police Crash reports sent to DOTD and mark the reports for the location of the crash.
