Direct Support Professional

Job title Direct Support Professional (DSP) Reports to House Manager Job purpose The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for providing person centered support for and assistance to individuals with developmental disabilities. The DSP will help clients achieve their personal goals, enhance their independence, and participate in their communities. This role involves a combination of direct care, advocacy, and community integration.


Duties and responsibilities

  • Personal Care: Assists clients with daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting.
  • Health and Wellness: Administer medications, monitor health conditions, and coordinate with healthcare professionals as needed.
  • Support Services: Implement individual support plans, ensuring clients’ needs and preferences are met.
  • Community Integration: Support clients in participating in community activities, including recreational, social, and vocational opportunities.
  • Skill Development: Assist clients in developing skills for independent living, such as cooking, budgeting, and personal hygiene.
  • Transportation: Provide transportation to appointments, activities, and other community outings.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of client progress, behaviors, and incidents; completing necessary reports in a timely manner.
  • Advocacy: Promote clients’ rights and advocate for their needs within the community and healthcare systems.
  • Safety: Ensure a safe and supportive environment by following all safety protocols and guidelines.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; relevant certifications or coursework in social work, psychology, or a related field is a plus.
  • Previous experience in a caregiving or support role, preferably with individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to support individuals with disabilities.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to pass a background check. .
Working conditions
  • This role may involve physical activities such as lifting, bending, and assisting clients with mobility.
  • Flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • May require travel within the community for appointments and activities.
