Job Summary: Entry-level position, trains to perform law enforcement in the preservation of peace; the prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes; the arrest or apprehension of violator; and the provision of assistance to citizens in emergencies, including the protection of civil rights; assures compliance with tribal, federal, state, county, and municipal laws and ordinances and agency rules and regulations pertaining to law enforcement work.
Job Duties: Attends formal police academy training in basic legal concepts and police procedures to best perform physically and cognitively. Academy training may include but not limited to: instruction on proper handling and firing of firearms; review radio codes and applicable penal code sections, an overview of the court systems, writing and editing police reports, observing law enforcement activities such as maintenance of order, crime prevention, and protection of citizens and property; learning and demonstrating competence in arrest and control technique, etc. During training, develop awareness, and understanding of the functions and responsibilities of a Deputy Marshal. Attends and completes a required Marshal Service 12 week Field Training Officer (FTO) program. Reviews policies, procedures, laws, rules, and/or regulations specific to Marshal Services to ensure compliance within the Cherokee Nation jurisdiction. Maintains a thorough knowledge of the Cherokee Nation patrol area and pertinent information regarding jurisdiction. Conduct inspections of equipment to ensure operation of equipment, completes preventive maintenance requirements, follows manufacturer's instructions; troubleshoots malfunctions, notifies supervisor of needed repairs, evaluates new equipment and techniques. Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications:
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT
High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
An additional six (6) months of experience in a related field.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should know Database, Internet, and Word Processing software.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating. Must obtain First Aid, and CPR certifications within six (6) months of hire and then maintain certifications throughout employment. Must obtain FLETC certification within one year of hire, or as soon as scheduling allows, and maintain throughout employment. Must complete or possess CLEET reciprocity certification within two years of hire and then maintain throughout employment.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Must meet and maintain eligibility for CLEET and Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) deputation. Must maintain no restrictions from testifying in any tribal, state, and federal court while employed with Cherokee Nation Marshal Service (CNMS). Must pass and maintain the ability to pass the Police Officer Suitability Test (POST) and Minnesota Multiphasic Physiological Inventory (MMPI). Must meet and maintain medical suitability. Must pass firearms qualifications semi-annually. Must meet and maintain periodic background adjudication for law enforcement. Must live within the Tribal Jurisdictional Service Area. Must comply with Cherokee Nation Marshal Service's Policies, Procedures, and Code of Conduct.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; explosives; risk of radiation and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
