Creative Arts Specialist Proposed Job Description/Duties & Responsibilities Many of the expectations of the Creative Arts Specialist are similar to those of our Activity Coordinators: v Prioritize the health & safety of all youths, adhering to NY State Childcare Regulations, site Health & Safety Plans, & BGC Employee Handbook v Plan, organize, prepare, & lead educational activities for youths v Provide adequate, engaged supervision for the youths in your area or group v Transport youths to & from program in BGC vehicles, as assigned v Ability to work in a face-paced environment v Safeguard confidentiality of members v Clean area after use v Inventory supplies, alerting supervisor if any materials are needed v Take accurate attendance during daily programs v Conduct daily safety checks, health checks, & periodic drills, as required v At all times maintain a professional appearance demeanor reflective of the high level of quality, standards, & expectations promoted by BGC v Participate in weekly site meetings & 1-on-1 meetings with supervisor v Alert supervisor to any safety concerns or other issues that may impact the health & well-being of youths in the program Art-Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Prepare activities, & provide developmentally appropriate instruction on art techniques, styles & mediums, help members skills in drawing, coloring, painting, & 3D techniques
Pottery experienced preferred
Supervise activities to ensure that learners interact in a supportive & respectful manner
Encourage creativity & self-expression among members
Be attentive & responsive to themes in members' art that might indicate distress in their personal lives or behaviors that suggest an issue
Prep the classroom by gathering & setting up materials, create samples & models as needed
Instruct members on the use of media & tools such as scissors, compasses, rulers, pencils, markers, pastels as well as acrylic, watercolor paint, fiber arts, collage, beading, origami, clay, & more
Organize display members' work - in the art room & around the club, as well as in various locations around the community
Encourage youths to assist with cleaning when possible, & thoroughly clean the program space after each lesson & at the end of the night
Teach problem-solving, collaboration, & time management
Evaluate member art & save pieces for art shows
Mat artwork, create gallery cards, & hang art shows (at the Dove Block Gallery, BGC Family Fun Nights, & local events)
Required Qualifications v At least 18 years of age v High School Diploma and/or at least 1 year of experience working with youths – time spent working with youths in an artistic capacity preferred v Communication & organization skills v Flexibility, willingness to step up & step in to help, as needed (may be asked to substitute in different areas other than the one to which you’re primarily assigned) v Dedication to acting with maturity, professionalism, & respect to coworkers, youths & families; ability to work with youths & adults from various backgrounds (including, but not limited to: age, socioeconomic status, race, sexual orientation, ability…) v Commitment to being a positive role model for youths, encouraging inclusion, teamwork, good sportsmanship, growth mindset, & kindness/respect v Driver’s license, ability to drive BGC-owned vehicles, willingness to assist with transportation (preferred) Work Environment This is a part-time, in-person position, serving at one or both of our two Geneva sites. The employee in this position will report to the Site Supervisor at their location, & will be expected to demonstrate a high level of maturity, professionalism, patience, & respect. The anticipated pay rate is $19.50/hour, with a typical schedule of Monday through Friday. During the school year, required hours will be 2pm to 6:30pm, plus additional mandatory trainings (announced in advance). In the summer, Creative Arts Specialists will work at least 11:30am to 6pm, Monday through Thursday, plus 8am to 6pm on Fridays. Note: Since there are often art shows and other creative opportunities outside of traditional program hours, there may be additional hours available some evenings/weekends. Current medical/TB check, background check, & other paperwork must be completed before working with children, with a start date of September 3rd, 2024 (mandatory training).
