Associate Director of Curriculum and Instruction

The RI Department of Education (RIDE) is seeking a talented, passionate leader to advance the states efforts to provide high quality instruction to the students of RI as the Associate Director of Curriculum and Instruction. The Associate Director of Curriculum and Instruction will be leading RIDEs efforts to improve access to high quality instructional materials and professional learning to support implementation towards the goal of improving teaching and learning in Rhode Island schools. The ideal candidate will be an experienced PK-12 education leader with expertise in high quality curriculum implementation, managing grants, and will have experience in providing technical assistance to schools and districts in PK-12 in implementing high quality curriculum, instruction, intervention, and assessment. DEPARTMENT OF ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATIONNON-CLASSIFIED JOB DESCRIPTIONTITLE: ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, Curriculum and Instruction ORGANIZATIONAL CENTER: This position is located in the Office of Instruction, Assessment and Curriculum, which is within the Division of Teaching & Learning.

The position reports directly to the Director of the Office of Instruction, Assessment and Curriculum.GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Incumbent is responsible for leading, managing, and supporting efforts to improve outcomes for students in core content areas. Responsibilities include development of agency policies, procedures, strategic plans, funding and operations for curriculum and instruction. This includes establishing the strategic direction of content supports, high-quality curriculum efforts, and instructional improvement agency plans with the Director of the Office of Instruction, Assessment and Curriculum, the Division Chief and other RIDE leaders. LEADERSHIP, MANAGEMENT AND COLLABORATION: The functions of leadership, management and collaboration are to be integrated so as to achieve both product and process objectives.

Teamwork and mutually supportive methods are ascribed as successful outcomes and are necessary for providing high quality service and achieving high standards of performance. Work must be conducted in ways that include and involve those who have a stake in the outcome and must ensure that issues related to equity and special needs are addressed in a comprehensive fashion. Must work in collaboration with other team members to support the Departments strategic priorities, including extensive work with cross-functional teams and with community stakeholders. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works in cooperation with colleagues with considerable latitude for the exercise of initiative and independent judgment.

Work is reviewed upon completion of results obtained and on the collaborative process used in achieving results. The Associate Director is subject to an annual performance assessment.SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Facilitates, directs, coordinates and assesses the work of professional, technical, and support staff. Work is reviewed in process, as necessary, and upon completion for achievement of desired results and on the collaborative processes used in achieving results. ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Direct development and implementation initiatives designed to support student academic success in core content areas.

Coordinate the development of research-based curriculum and instruction and make recommendations to LEAs concerning the use of effective approaches.Participate in relevant meetings and conferences, coordinate with national and regional technical assistance centers and promote the development of projects of national relevance in Rhode Island. Facilitate collaboration among RIDE staff in program areas to strengthen processes, find efficiencies and develop team-based approaches to the work. Engage with external stakeholders in relevant areas of responsibility to understand their perspectives and consider improvements to RIDEs approaches to supporting students.Ensure relevant data collections are meeting state, federal and grant requirements and work collaboratively with RIDEs data team to implement data quality improvements.Provide leadership and support for the coordination of contracts and team efforts related to assigned areas. Supervises and supports assigned staff working in initiative areas to ensure high-quality and timely deliverables.

Develop, review, and recommend budgets, policies and regulatory guidance documents to ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, and/or regulations.Provide oversight and/or direction of the discretionary and non-discretionary grant program funds.Direct ongoing data collection and policy analysis to inform the continuous improvement of initiatives in relevant program areas at the school, district, and statewide level.Lead meetings and build consensus with RIDE staff, school and school system leaders and partner organizations regarding relevant areas of responsibility.Recommend strategic initiatives and changes in strategic direction to the Director of Instruction, Assessment and Curriculum, Chief of the Division of Teaching & Learning and other RIDE leaders. Seek opportunities to write state, federal and privately funded grants.Represent RIDE at a variety of meetings, conferences, and public gatherings.Perform related work as assigned.
