Role Overview

Reporting to the Head of MV or SV Fleet, and in conjunction with the corresponding Senior Technical Superintendent and/or Technical Superintendent(s), this role is responsible for the provision of compliant vessels for safe and efficient operations, and line management of Masters and Skippers of assigned vessels.

The Marine Superintendent is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation, ensuring optimal reliability and availability.
This includes overseeing the safe daily operations, on-board general assessment of vessels, inspections, ensuring full compliance with all applicable regulations, coordinating
the activities of the crew, and maintaining the vessel in accordance with class and statutory requirements.

As Marine Superintendent you and the corresponding Senior Technical Superintendent and/or Technical Superintendent will be the primary shore-based point of contact for the assigned vessels. You are required to provide dedicated support to the vessel on-board management team. Effectively communicating and coordinating with the Technical Superintendent and all other support elements within the Fleet Group to define and progress
any required actions to an effective conclusion.

It is also imperative, as the primary point of contact, that timely and effective communication of any issues which may impact on the availability of the vessel, is provided to the Operations Team to allow them to effectively manage any potential impact on the
commercial operation of the vessel, in line with agreed service level agreements.

In Summary the Marine Superintendent must fully support the vessels under their direct management, providing maximum vessel availability, within budget, consistent with safe methods of operation through coordination of Fleet Group resource and whilst providing effective communication to the Operations team as the customer.


Principal accountabilities
  • Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of assigned vessels in line with internal standards as developed by the Standards and Performance Department and in compliance with the International Safety Management (ISM) Code
  • Responsible for vessel service availability and reliability in line with Service Level Agreements
  • Responsible for maintenance of all Flag state and associated vessel certification
  • Responsible for ensuring that all incidents, defects, and audit findings are investigated and analysed, and corrective action is effectively implemented.
  • Provide management cover of other vessels within the Fleet Group , as required to support colleagues during events such as sickness, annual leave, overhauls etc.
  • Active participation in reviewing the Company Management System, in collaboration with the vessel’s crew, to drive continual improvement and enhancement of policies and procedures.
  • Required to liaise with Head of Fleet and internal customers on operational matters including vessel deployments, performance etc.
  • Line management of Masters and Skippers of assigned vessels
  • Ensuring that all assigned vessels are manned with qualified and medically fit officers and crew in line with internal requirements in coordination with Crewing
team, as well as general line management duties in relation to personnel management
  • Required to liaise with Head of Fleet and internal customers on technical and operational matters including vessel performance etc.
  • Provide out of hours duty cover for the vessels based on a duty rota.
  • As a member of one or more Emergency Response teams, it is expected that exercises are attended, annual leave is communicated with deputies assigned and
full familiarisation is maintained with the relevant emergency response procedures and protocols.
  • Accountable to the Head of Fleet (MV / SV).
  • Management of department processes should be in line with company expectations and ensuring consultation is completed with relevant process reviewers when adding, amending, deleting, and reviewing owned processes.

Strategic Direction

  • Ensure clear understanding of the goals of the Fleet Management Team, how this team impact on the Wider business and how your role and those of your colleagues in the Fleet Group can impact on the achievement of these goals.
  • Build confidence and credibility with the vessel’s crew by developing and maintaining frequent direct interaction opportunities, including video and telephone
calls/meeting, on board inspection and attendance during the overhaul periods.
  • Establish a detailed knowledge of the vessels under your direct management.
  • Proactively liaise with the other Marine Superintendents in both Fleets to ensure information, knowledge and skills are share and utilised optimally.
  • Proactive management of support to the vessels utilising the resources and skills within the Fleet Group. Ensuring effective delegation of tasks and follow up to
ensure completion within the agreed timescale and to the required standard.
  • Monitor and analyse performance, provide proactive suggestions for improvement where needed.
  • Strive for excellence in all areas of operation through compliance and by optimising the utilisation of resource.

Stakeholder Management

  • Liaison with Flag State to ensure vessel and company is ready in all respects for operations.
  • Liaison with Operations Department/IOCC for vessel regard to vessel deployments, performance etc.
  • Participation and chairing in specified meetings as directed by Head of MV/SV Fleet
  • Build positive relationships with other teams throughout the wider business, including but not limited to Operations, Crewing, Procurement, Finance, Shore Support and Logistics.
  • Building relationships and rapport at all levels, inside and outside of the organisation. Ensuring consistent and professional standards of communication are maintained.
  • Work closely with Performance and Standards as well as Operations to ensure safe and efficient vessel management.
  • Work with Procurement and Supply Chain Management to ensure availability of necessary spares for vessel management.
  • Regular travel throughout the network to meet with and build relationships with colleagues, and key stakeholders.
  • Anticipate, meet, and exceed the needs of internal customers.
  • Ensure total understanding and awareness of KPIs and provide constructive feedback and suggestions for improvement in the KPI process.

Leadership

  • Maintain regular communications with assigned vessels, including planned weekly calls and regular visits. Support assigned vessels in working through any identified issues.
  • Build confidence and credibility with the vessel’s crew by developing and maintaining frequent direct interaction opportunities, including video and telephone calls/meeting, on board inspection and attendance during the overhaul periods. .
  • Proactive management of support to the vessels utilising the resources and skills within the Fleet Group. Ensuring effective delegation of tasks and follow up to ensure completion within the agreed timescale and to the required standard.
  • Monitor and analyse performance, provide proactive suggestions for improvement where needed.
  • Strive for excellence in all areas of operation through compliance and by optimising the utilisation of resource.
  • Be proactive in the creation of a team culture which is collaborative, committed, innovative and enthusiastic at all levels, from the crew on board assigned vessels, the
Fleet Group and Management team and in the wider business.
  • Share expertise and identify where team members may require additional support, flagging any specific requirements to the Head of Fleet.
  • Ensure clear understanding of company procedures and compliance with the same across all teams.
  • Promote shared ownership of goals and objectives across departments.
  • Regular travel to the vessels and throughout the network, providing visible engagement and driving the promotion of continual improvement.
  • Ability to meet challenging targets and effectively utilise the skills and resources available.
  • Recognise and celebrate good performance whilst proactively participating in implementing strategies to improve performance where necessary.

Budget Responsibility

  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Technical Superintendent and/or Technical Superintendent and vessel’s crew, Finance team and other stakeholders to create a realistic and achievable annual operational and overhaul budget for each vessel.
  • Detailed management and tracking of expenditure for review during monthly finance review meetings, including unbudgeted costs which may be applicable for recovery.
  • Provide input to forecasting of expenditure as part of financial reporting.
  • Meet defined deadlines for financial reporting and be prepared to present cases for extraordinary expenditure items either budgeted or unbudgeted.

Safety and Compliance Management

  • Liaise with the Flag state for maintenance of vessel trading certification for all assigned vessels
  • Maintain status register of all Flag state and associated certification for all assigned vessels
  • Responsible for ensuring that all incidents, defects, and audit findings are investigated and analysed, and corrective action is effectively implemented. Actively
participate in incident investigation, root cause analysis, leading to the identification and effective implementation of corrective and preventative actions on specific vessels and where applicable across the wider fleet.
  • Complete frequent periodic safety/operational/navigational vessel inspection visits
completing inspection report.
  • Ensure all necessary documentation and equipment required for vessel operations is maintained and complies with relevant legislation.
  • Provide advice and guidance to Masters and Skippers on marine, legal and professional matters.
  • Drive implementation of the company’s safety and environmental strategies.

Personnel Management

  • Ensure all vessels are appropriately manned at all times.
  • Contribute towards succession planning for mariners, which may include identifying and interviewing suitably qualified and competent Masters, Deck Officers and Deck Ratings. This will be in conjunction with the Crewing team and Human Resource Department.
  • Complete Performance Appraisal and any other HR related functions associated with the Master/Skipper.
  • Conduct general personnel management functions for assigned vessel crew – which may include, but not be limited to, absence/grievance/performance management - in accordance with line management matrix.
  • Attend and undertake liaison work with relevant Trade Union Representatives.


Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

Essential
  • Management level STCW II Certificate of competency with associated sea-going experience; OR
equivalent experience in passenger/ro-pax vessel operational/safety management.
  • Experienced professional with a track record in exercising sound judgement in the fields of business and vessel operations
  • Trained in incident management / auditing
  • A self-reliant customer focussed individual with a demonstratable track record in people management
  • Experience in managing a large and diverse workforce
  • Working effectively in an environment which requires excellence in safety, operations, and customer service.
  • Demonstrates excellent analytical and problem-solving skills coupled with strong leadership, influencing and collaborative working skills.

Desirable
  • Master Mariner with an STCW Master II/2 Certificate of Competency
  • Management level seagoing experience on passenger/ro-pax ships, with command experience preferred
  • Prior experience in vessel management
