Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a leading protection agency with a mandate to protect, advocate and promote durable solutions for displacement affected populations.
DRC has been operating in Ukraine since 2014, currently DRC employs over 700 staff in Ukraine and will continue significant scale-up in 2024 to implement emergency response in the Protection, Livelihoods, Shelter/NFIs and Humanitarian Disarmament and Peacebuilding (humanitarian mine action) sectors, using direct interventions, support to duty bearers and civil society organizations (CSOs), and partnerships with CSOs. DRC will continue and adapt its durable solutions portfolio to the evolving context.
DRC is currently looking for a highly qualified Communication Specialist to join our team in Kyiv.
About the job
This role has a country focus and ensures compliance with DRC procedures and guidelines within the country. As a Communication Specialist, you will contribute to the development of country strategies, which are translated into action plans and day-to-day tasks. You will provide support and/or technical guidance to country operations while overseeing country activities.
Your main responsibilities will be:
- Support Communications Manager with design and implementation of a country programme communication strategy;
- Lead the general coordination of communication activities in Ukraine;
- Responsible for the planning and the content of quaterly Newsletter and other communication materials (social media posts, articles for websites, interviews, maps, Sit Reps, etc);
- Provide guidelines to field teams and partner organisation on DRC visibility rules and donor requirements with regard to visibility materials;
- Lead the development of engaging and effective communication and media materials for social and traditional media channels such as press releases, success stories, brochures, newsletters, photos, videos and regularly update the DRC’s websites / Facebook/ Twitter page;
- Develop and strengthen the capacities of field teams to support communication activities including the development of multimedia tools, training, and provision of information and technical support;
- Manage incoming media requests, including the vetting of journalists and appointment and preparation of DRC staff members to be interviewed;
- Support Comms Manager with coordination of external communication service providers (photographers, designers, translators, etc.);
- Supporting preparation for external events, including high-level visits, and virtual and in-person DRC Ukraine outreach events.
About you
To be successful in this role we expect you to have at least 3 years’ experience working in communications and/or advocacy and Master's degree in communication, journalism, advocacy or similar.
Moreover, we also expect the following:
- Excellent oral and written skills and demonstrated ability to write and develop strong communications material.
- Experience working in an international NGO.
- Experience in designing, editing and producing publications
- Full professional proficiency in English and Ukrainian.

Salary and conditions will be in accordance with Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for national staff.
