Junior Consultant for Peace and Security

Organizational Setting and Reporting Relationships: The Junior Consultant will report directly to the Senior Adviser to the Secretary General. The role involves supporting the work in the areas of peace and security.
Deliverables: The Junior Consultant will assist the Senior Adviser with the following tasks:
Research and analysis:
  • Conduct research on topics related to the work of King Hamad Global Center (KHGC) on peaceful coexistence.
  • Conduct research, analyze relevant trends, and stay abreast of the national political files of countries in the Middle East, especially those in transition or post-conflict rehabilitation, as well as regional parliamentary organizations.
  • Draft high-quality reports, briefs, and presentations on peace and security.
  • Prepare, edit reports, and draft regular bulletins on developments in the Middle East.
Programme support and coordination:
  • Assist in designing new projects, set up mechanisms for their effective follow-up, and develop project management tools aimed at facilitating work in the areas of peace and security.
  • Provide support to the ongoing work on peaceful coexistence.
  • Draft agendas, convocations, background documents, and reports for the Committee on Middle East Questions.
  • Provide support in drafting concept notes, programmes, and preparations related to the IPU Science for Peace Schools.
  • Provide technical and logistical support for workshops, meetings, and events, including the successful organization and coordination of these activities.
  • Prepare Power Point presentations and other communication materials related to programme activities
Liaison and partnerships:
  • Serve as the focal point between IPU and KHGC, fostering partnerships, promoting initiatives, and advancing the agenda of projects related to peace, security and peaceful coexistence.
  • Liaise with external partners to support and coordinate peace-related initiatives.
Work implies frequent interaction with the following:
  • Members of Parliament and parliamentary staff
  • Specialized IPU bodies and committees
  • External partners and institutions
Results expected: High-quality outputs; speedy delivery of services. Excellent research and drafting skills, production of high-calibre reports and efficiency in providing general administrative and logistical support to Senior Adviser to the Secretary General. A high level of discretion, political tact and commitment is essential.
Qualifications and requirements:
Education: Advanced university degree in international relations, political science, law or a related field.
Language: Proficiency in English and Arabic and an excellent knowledge of French and other UN languages, preferably Spanish. Knowledge of other languages will be an advantage.
Experience: At least 1 year of work experience in a similar or relevant field.
Other skills:
Previous experience working in a parliamentary environment, including the IPU, will be a distinct advantage. Experience with projects related to peace, security, and promoting peaceful coexistence is also desirable.

Contract length:
The consultancy is for the period from 15 October 2024 to 14 April 2025, with the possibility of extension subject to review of performance and the availability of funds.

Remuneration:
This consultancy is being offered at CHF 5,500 per month.

Location:
The consultancy is based at the IPU Headquarters in Geneva. However, the consultant can work remotely, with the requirement to be physically present in the office as needed. The work may involve occasional travel, the costs of which will be covered by the IPU.
