Job Overview As Head of Portfolio Strategy, you will lead the design and execution of SHL’s delivery device portfolio strategy within a cross-functional process and with high visibility within the organization. To further ensure success, you will look beyond SHL for external opportunities to address unmet needs and expand SHL’s presence in the field of drug delivery.
Main Responsibilities
Portfolio Strategy: Take the responsibility for developing SHL’s global portfolio strategy in alignment with SHL’s commercial objectives and overall business strategy. Initiate refinement of existing and development of new products and services, drawing on research generated by the Intelligence & Insights team as well as learnings from customer interactions across the organization. Utilize Portfolio Strategy team resources efficiently to these ends with market potential as the key driver. Collaborate closely with SHL’s technical organization for the successful downstream implementation of the portfolio strategy.
External Search/Evaluate: With the Intelligence & Insights team, develop an accurate and complete understanding of the competitive landscape. Endeavor to map the broader drug delivery technology landscape, including the full range of elements that surround the drug itself, such as devices, formulation technologies, digital solutions, and other aspects. With the CEO office, develop a plan for formalizing external engagement with promising technologies, from feasibility agreements to partnerships to full acquisitions. Work with appropriate teams, including innovation, to evaluate technologies in a multifaceted way and within frameworks that ensure dispassionate judgment.
Functional Integration: Build the bridge between SHL’s commercial organization (e.g., account management, strategic marketing) and technical organization (e.g., innovation, product development, product management). In collaboration with the Intelligence & Insights team, determine research needs, interpret findings, and translate them into portfolio initiatives. With Global Sales, communicate with select customers for early engagement on new technologies within our portfolio.
Team Development: Manage and, as necessary, grow a talented team of individuals with strong experience in and perspective on relevant domains of knowledge. Provide guidance and mentorship and foster a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
Minimum requirements
Work experience: 10+ years of experience in technically driven roles in the medical device or pharmaceutical industry. Significant experience working in management roles at pharmaceutical companies in device-focused roles, especially technical ones, is preferred.
Technical knowledge: Deep understanding of the technical aspects involved in the design, development, and manufacturing of medical devices. Ability to integrate this technical knowledge in a cross-functional development process.
Commercial mindset: Ability to take a commercial perspective and thinking in terms of generating customer value, business profitability, and growth. Ability to combine commercial and technical knowledge.
Visionary thinking: Not afraid to challenge conventional thinking through a combination of deep commercial expertise, a clear vision, and true passion for the topic. Acting as a sparring partner and advisor, bringing in new ideas from the outside.
Project management: Proven ability to initiate and drive highly complex, global, strategic, and cross-functional projects in international matrix organizations. Ability to deal with and manage uncertainty.
Stakeholder management: Ability to drive forward the commercial agenda by managing stakeholder groups from diverse cultural backgrounds, internal and external audiences, and varying levels of seniority. Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and influence others.
Communication and presentation: Creative personality, high attention to details and high focus on quality. Ability to structure and present quantitative and qualitative data in an easy-to-understand and convincing way.
Driven mindset: Motivated to shape this recently established team and flexible to work with an evolving scope of responsibility.

Preferred qualifications
Significant experience working in management roles at pharmaceutical companies in device-focused roles, especially technical ones, is preferred.
Good level of German
Bachelor’s or master’s (preferred) degree in a technical discipline, preferably engineering or a similar field.
