Duration: Initial 12-month contract (6 months' probationary period)
Background:
Founded in 2004, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA) is a leading non-governmental organization committed to improving the health and wellbeing of women, children, and adolescents across West Africa. Through programs focused on maternal and child health, water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH), and gender equality, WBFA works to create impactful, lasting change. With our newly awarded project on NNJ (Neonatal Jaundice) and Kernicterus, titled “Project Oscar” the Foundation aims to raise awareness about neonatal jaundice and kernicterus, while addressing the broader challenges faced by health workers, mothers, and children in Nigeria.
Scope of work:
The Communications officer will be integral to supporting the Advocacy, Communications & Campaign Manager in executing Project Oscar's communications strategy. This includes creating engaging content, managing social media channels, producing advocacy materials, and supporting the overall visibility of the NNJ project. The officer will also assist in driving media outreach, supporting stakeholder engagement, and ensuring that WBFA’s health and advocacy messages reach key audiences.
Key Responsibilities
Communications:

  • Develop and implement a content strategy for Project Oscar, ensuring timely communication of NNJ-related messages and updates across all channels.
  • Create clear, compelling written and digital content that communicates the importance of neonatal jaundice prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, aligning with the project's advocacy goals.
  • Write and edit diverse materials, including blog posts, press releases, reports, fact sheets, and social media content that highlight the NNJ project’s objectives, progress, and impact.
  • Create and design compelling digital content for social media showcasing WBFA programmes, initiatives and advocacy.
  • Curate visually compelling multimedia content (pictures, & videos) to raise awareness about NNJ, kernicterus, and WBFA’s maternal and child health initiatives.
  • Understand the landscape we work in, who our stakeholders are and reach those audiences.
  • Support in managing WBFA’s social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Linked In), ensuring timely, consistent, and relevant posting that aligns with Project Oscar’s milestones, events, and campaigns.
  • Monitor and evaluate our communications activities to improve future outputs, understand whether we’re reaching our audience and help find solutions when we need to change.
  • Support the team in maintaining relationships with stakeholders, including health professionals, donors, partners, and community leaders, ensuring timely communication and effective reporting.
  • Provide administrative assistance for Project Oscar and other assigned communications tasks, including preparing weekly and monthly progress reports for donors, stakeholders, and internal teams.
  • Help execute advocacy campaigns for NNJ prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, creating content and materials that influence policy and public attitudes towards neonatal jaundice.
  • Carry out other tasks and perform any other duties as required to support the organization’s projects.
Skills and Experience:
  • BA/BSc/HND in Communications, Media, Public Relations, Public Health, or a related field; advanced certifications in digital media or public health communications are an advantage.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years in a communications role, ideally within an NGO, health, or advocacy-focused organization, with a demonstrated understanding of health communication campaigns, particularly those targeting maternal and child health or public health issues like NNJ.
  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills for a range of audiences; ability to simplify complex health topics into engaging, accessible content.
  • Proficiency in using social media platforms (Twitter, Instagram, Linked In, Facebook) and tools for content scheduling, and analytics.
  • Familiarity with multimedia content production (photos, & videos,) and the ability to create visual assets to support campaigns and social media efforts.
  • Experience in supporting or managing projects, with strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • A strategic mindset and the ability to offer and receive constructively critical feedback.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively with drive and at pace.
