As a Te Tiriti o Waitangi partner we are committed to supporting and enabling Māori, whānau, hapū, Iwi and communities to realise their own potential and aspirations.
Our people are as diverse as the communities we serve. We care about the wellbeing and success of our people and provide a supportive and inclusive working environment where people can thrive and be who they are.

Senior Policy Analysts and Policy Analysts - Disability Policy Team
  • Multiple Permanent roles
  • Wellington based

We have an exciting opportunity for you to take your policy career further! We are seeking experienced Policy Analysts and Senior Policy Analysts to join the Disability Policy team at the Ministry of Social Development (MSD).

Mō te tīma / About our team
The Disability Policy team provides strategic policy advice to enable disabled people to live good lives. We are responsible for a broad range of policy issues impacting disabled people and their whānau, and provide advice to both the Minister for Disability Issues and the Minister for Social Development and Employment, collaborating closely with Whaikaha – the Ministry of Disabled People. The team is part of the International, Disability, and Generational Group within MSD's Policy Branch, which takes a unique population-based lens to social development, employment and disability issues.
The team is leading work on the Carers' Strategy and Mahi Aroha – the Carers' Action Plan; employment for disabled people; and system-focussed advice on a wide range of supports that MSD provides to improve the lives of disabled people and their whānau. We also contribute to work across government to support consideration of disabled people and their whānau in policy advice.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako / Skills and experience
  • We're keen to hear from motivated Senior Policy Analysts and Policy Analysts with a track record in delivering excellent advice.
  • You'll need great people skills as you'll be working with stakeholders across our organisation and externally.
  • You'll need strong analytical and critical thinking ability, excellent judgement and sharp writing skills.
  • We're keen on people who will fit our collegial, supportive culture, and have the action orientation to shape, lead and contribute to policy work that is a priority for Ministers and our Chief Executive.
  • Experience in the sector is a bonus but not essential.

If you're considering the Senior Policy Analyst role, we'll also expect you to demonstrate:
  • political nous, strategic agility and experience in leading advice on complex policy challenges;
  • skills in building relationships and leading engagement with stakeholders, both internally and externally to the Ministry;
  • experience in enhancing the team's capability, including supporting junior staff with their projects and development; and
  • the ability to think broadly and into the future to ensure our policy advice is comprehensive and enduring.
Benefits of working in policy at MSD
  • We are a large organisation with policies and services that support most New Zealanders at some point in their life – from Child Care Assistance to Public Housing to Superannuation.
  • We work collaboratively with the service delivery groups of our ministry, to ensure fit for purpose policies – you can see the policies you have developed right through to implementation.
  • Our practice is guided by a foundation of shared cultural behaviours which has embedded a positive and supportive working environment.
  • We have a new strategic direction – Te Pae Tawhiti – that sets out a strong vision and purpose for MSD.
  • We are committed to building diversity, accessibility, and inclusion in our workplace. We can offer flexible working arrangements.
