He angitūtanga | About the role
This is an excellent opportunity to provide executive-level support to the Deputy Director-General of Public Affairs (DDG). In this role, you will be a key member of the Public Affairs Group, which has an ambitious work programme aimed at achieving significant conservation outcomes for Aotearoa, New Zealand.
Reporting directly to the DDG of Public Affairs, your focus will be on ensuring they are thoroughly prepared and supported through effective planning and executive assistance. You will bring your outstanding organisational skills, ability to prioritise information flow, and the capability to engage with the right networks to manage and represent priorities effectively. You should be confident, well presented, and comfortable communicating with the wider leadership team to effectively manage time and workflow. A great sense of humour is a plus.
On a daily basis, you will stay two steps ahead, ensuring the DDG is well-prepared and leaving no room for any potential surprises.
Your responsibilities will include:
  • Ensuring effective running of the office of the DDG
  • Building strong relationships with the broader Public Affairs Leadership Team and their support staff
  • Maintaining good systems and process for the Public Affairs Leadership Team
  • Coordination and administration support including email/diary management, meeting facilitation and travel coordination
  • Developing presentations and reports as required
  • Assisting and coordinating the quality assurance of complex and urgent correspondence such as Parliamentary briefs, Ministers reports, Ministerial and OIA requests
  • Communicating effectively and clearly with internal and external stakeholders with confidence and ease.

You will be recognised as a credible and effective relationship builder, comfortable working with diverse people. With experience in a similar executive support role, you will be adept at working with senior leaders and proactively managing the day-to-day operations for the Deputy Director-General.
To be considered for the role you will demonstrate the following capabilities:
  • Exceptional time and diary management skills.
  • Strong relationship management skills with the ability to build and leverage networks.
  • Experience handling sensitive and confidential information on behalf of the DDG, ensuring privacy requirements are maintained.
  • Strong expertise in MS Office, especially Teams and Planner, with a commitment to improving skills and learning new applications and processes.
  • Comfort in engaging and collaborating with iwi and tangata whenua.
  • A solid understanding of the workings of central government, including the roles of Parliament, Ministers, and public service agencies.

The salary range for this position is $79,656 - $100,639 with the starting salary of the successful applicant based on their relevant skills and experience.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
