Do you have a passion for innovation focused on product application coupled with technical depth in dynamical systems, control and heat transfer analysis? If so, the Thermo-Mechanical Systems Discipline of Collins Aerospace Applied Research and Technology needs your skills. Our Senior Research Scientist position demands strong engineering fundamentals, expertise in analytical and numerical physics-based modelling of thermal and mechanical systems, capable of identifying appropriate modelling method for a given problem, and validating the method with experimental data. The Senior Research scientist position may contribute to the following areas:
reduced order (Dymola and Matlab/Simulink) and high-fidelity (CFD, FEA) multi-scale thermal-fluid and thermal-mechanical modeling in a range of aircraft applications including heat exchangers, thermal management, ice protection, and power electronics.
development of innovative thermodynamic system and components
thermo-mechanical control systems design, analysis and simulation in Matlab/Simulink and/or Dymola.
experimental validation and demonstration of thermal components and systems
development of techniques for multi-physics topology optimization, and execution of topology optimization studies
modeling and analysis of new and novel thermodynamic systems for power management, waste heat recovery, and cooling
Basic Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Aerospace/ Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or similar is required
We will consider Ph.D. candidates with no formal experience. M.S. candidates must have 3+ year of experience in a relevant work environment
Analytic modeling and computer programming skills in common computer languages
Dynamic systems modelling: analytic and computer-based (preferably in Dymola).
General understanding of FEA and CFD modeling
Demonstrated experience in publishing and presenting research
Preferred Qualifications:
Adaptability to a range of vastly different dynamical systems challenges and the ability to thrive in a collaborative environment
Excellent communication skills, informal and formal presentation skills, and ability to foster positive relationships with internal and external partners
Ability to manage uncertain requirements, formulate a problem from ill-defined needs, develop approaches to solve problems, and recognize when additional subject matter expertise is needed
Experience developing externally funded programs with relevance to a particular research agenda
