Orchard Chargehand

The Role:
The Orchard Chargehand will support the Orchard Supervisor in the safe, effective, and efficient running of the orchards, stepping up to organize and supervise daily operations in the absence of the Orchard Supervisor. This is a hands-on role with a variety of duties including overseeing the team, ensuring tasks are completed to a high standard, and maintaining orchard equipment and estate. The Chargehand will play a crucial role in the daily upkeep of the orchard, participating directly in all operational activities.
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Orchard Supervisor in organizing and overseeing daily orchard activities.
  • Deputise for the Orchard Supervisor when required, taking charge of team supervision and decision-making.
  • Drive tractors and operate various machinery necessary for orchard operations.
  • Maintain and service orchard machinery, ensuring all equipment is in safe and working order.
  • Spray trees to maintain health and prevent disease, ensuring correct application techniques.
  • Spread granular fertilizer accurately to support orchard growth.
  • Conduct general maintenance of the orchard estate, including grass cutting, hedge trimming, repairing rows, and maintaining tidy yards.
  • Participate in the harvesting process during autumn, ensuring efficient and timely collection of produce.
  • Prune trees manually to maintain tree health and productivity.
  • Train, guide, and support team members, especially in the absence of the Orchard Supervisor.
  • Ensure all work is conducted in compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Perform any other duties as required and directed by the Orchard Supervisor or Manager.
The Ideal Candidate:
  • Previous experience working in an orchard, farm, or similar outdoor, labour-intensive environment.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to organize and supervise a team.
  • Proficient in driving tractors, operating farm machinery, and carrying out routine maintenance tasks.
  • Experience in spraying, pruning, and other hands-on horticultural tasks.
  • Ability to work independently, self-directing, and motivated to learn new skills.
  • Flexibility to work according to seasonal demands and weather conditions.
  • Desirable skills include welding, changing parts, and servicing or greasing equipment.
  • Passion for working outdoors and an interest in farming or horticulture.
