Research scientist (f_m_x) – Volcano faulting and landscape monitoring
The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for research into the geosphere. With around 1,650 employees, we develop a sound understanding of systems and processes of the solid Earth as well as strategies and options for action to counter global change, understand natural hazards and sustainably secure energy and raw material requirements.
For the Volcano monitoring group in section 2.1 "Physics of Earthquakes and Volcanoes" (department “Geophysics”), we are looking for a motivated researcher:
Research scientist (f_m_x) – Volcano faulting and landscape monitoring
This position is to support the Volcano-Tectonics and Hazards working group. Candidates with strong interest in drone and experimental technologies and with expertise in volcano-tectonics and volcano hazards are encouraged to apply. The position is funded 50% for 2 years with a planned extension for another 2 years, and also covers funds for computer power, field works, visiting conferences and workshops, and publication charges. We provide support for additional third-party funding applications in case own research shall be further developed.
Fixed-term: 2 years (with the option to extend for another 2 years)
Salary: The position is classed as salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group is determined on the basis of the Collective Wage Agreement and the respective personal qualifications.
Working hours: Teilzeit 50% (derzeit 19,50 h/Woche)
Place of work: Potsdam

Your responsibilities:
- Further developing the drone and volcano monitoring tools in our team
- Planning and participating in field works
- Using your creativity and technical/engineering skills to improve, set up and run experiments for realizing scientific tasks and ideas related to volcano-tectonic interactions
- Working in the bubble and volcano labs
- Contributing to the development of novel approaches in volcano deformations and faulting
Your qualifications:
- MSc (Ph D in Earth Science, Engineering or Informatics is considered a plus)
- Proven interest in visiting active volcanoes
- Experience on using drones for change detection and pixel offset
- Experience with GNSS for ground control measurements and processing
- Experience on linking remote sensing and process modelling
- Experience in 3D object reconstruction, structure from motion and point cloud analysis
- Programming skills (Py) advantageous
- Ability to plan to conduct independent field work
- Drone pilot license and car driving license
- Good written and oral skills in English
