MASTER - THESIS IN PREPARATION OF FLUORESCENT CARBON-BASED QUANTUM DOTS FOR SENSING
INM´s research group “Structure Formation” investigates how molecules, polymers and colloidal particles join to form materials. It studies fundamental processes of structure formation and applies them to prepare new materials. We study how the properties of composite and hybrid materials depend on their microstructures and how to change them. To this end, we systematically vary size, geometry, chemical composition, and arrangement of the materials’ constituents.
Carbon quantum dots (C QDs) are zero-dimensional carbonaceous material, which are composed of sp2- or sp3-hybridized carbon domains and coated with different surface groups. Due to their ultra-small size (below 10 nm), simple synthesis, environmental-friendly, and high luminescent yields, C QDs are emerging as a novel class of optical materials in multiple applications.

Your tasks
- Synthesize fluorescent C QDs
- Full characterizations (structural and morphological) of C QDs
- Optimizing the optical properties of C QDs
- Preparation of fluorescent composites made of C QDs
- Application of the developed fluorescent quantum dots as sensors
- Background in chemistry, materials science and optical materials
- Experience on wet chemical synthesis
- Interested in optical materials
- Very good communication and writing skills and thorough command of the English language. German language skills are beneficial but not required.
