: this position provides leadership in the organization and supervision of all operational areas of the retail store. This position ensures the mission of The Salvation Army is supported by the Thrift Store generating funds and influencing positively the communities in which it operates.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Store Operations
- Directs all operations of the store to meet sales targets and control expenses while maintaining customer service standards.
- Oversees safety of all customers, staff, and volunteers while in the store.
- Plans and directs store layouts and ensures attractiveness of store.
- Handles customer concerns or complaints in a timely and courteous manner.
- Ensures all cash operations are carried out according to Salvation Army Policy and Procedures and nightly deposits are secure.
- Oversees control of inventory by ensuring store donations are retrieved, sorted, and priced appropriately.
Staff Supervision
- Provides direction and support to staff.
- Schedules and chair program staff meetings.
- Oversees hiring, orientation, training, performance management and termination of staff in compliance with Divisional and Territorial standards.
- Conducts regular supervision with staff; ensures that performance reviews are completed, in a timely manner, for staff.
- Ensures that all staff completes all mandatory training and certifications as required; identify any training needs.
Administration
- Plans store sales, promotions, and auctions.
- Plans staff schedule, staff meetings, and training sessions.
- Prepares daily and weekly reports for Business Manager.
- Prepares deposit information and sends to Regional Accounting.
- Manages store budget within guidelines, attends budget meetings.
- Completes supervisory functions in HRIS/HCM inclusive of approving vacation, sick time, timesheets, etc. for those supervised.
- Provides all needed reports and documentation as requested.
Health and Safety
- Works in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Ensures that all staff are aware of emergency procedures and are prepared to implement them immediately as necessary.
- Ensures the proper procedures are followed in the event of a workplace injury or illness, conducting incident investigations as applicable.
- Responsible to maintain a level of competency of Occupational Health and Safety.
Perform other position-related duties as required.

MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:
- This position reports directly to the Business Manager.
- This position will be responsible for Thrift Store team of 3-4 FT employees as well as several PT & casuals.
- This position will be responsible for Thrift Store staff and volunteer training, and management.
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- Participates in annual budget preparation for the Thrift Store.
- Oversees handling of cash / tills and reconciling of days receipts.
- Prepares deposit summaries for Regional Accounting.
- Orders supplies etc. within budget guidelines.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a permanent full-time position.
- Working environment is in a store.
- Flexibility in work schedule is required.
- Work schedule will vary from week to week and will include weekdays and/or Saturdays.
- Required to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching, and reaching is required.
- Ability to lift/move on a regular basis up to 30 pounds.
- Dress appropriately for the job.
- Travel may be required from time to time. Program vehicle is available.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- NOTE: For some jobs, you may be required to provide validated educational documentation.
Education/Certifications:
- Completion of a formal post-secondary/college program of one academic year in Business/Retail Management or equivalent.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- Minimum of two (2) years of prior related retail store management experience, specifically in secondhand merchandise preferred and supervisory experience.
- Computer skills in Excel and Word.
- Cash handling experience is required.
- Experience with cash registers and related processes and procedures, i.e., bank deposits, summary reports, etc.
- Experience with leadership and team building understanding of the conflict resolution approach.
- Ability to enter data and perform statistical analysis efficiently and accurately.
- Have / Obtain First Aid / CPR Certificate and keep it current.
- Experience with specific systems/programs related to The Salvation Army is an asset.
- Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army - its mission, culture, and values
PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:
- Able to work within a team environment to provide direction, resolve conflict, ensure appropriate use of donations.
- Able to handle physical demands which include lifting / carrying of items up to 30 lbs, frequent twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, reaching overhead, pushing and pulling, lifting, kneeling, climbing ladders, standing for long periods of time.
- Willing to work flexible hours.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral).
- Results driven with superior time management skills and the ability to delegate effectively.
- Experience in performing administrative tasks.
- Team player: ability to work in a compassionate, respectful, and non-judgmental manner.
- Familiarity with cash handling, pricing, sorting procedures, product display and promotion guidelines. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- A valid NWT Class “5” Driver’s License and a current copy of the driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
- Must provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through local police detachment.
- May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

- A valid class 5 License and clean driver abstract
- Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training.
DAYS and HOURS of work: This is a Full-time position based on 40 hours per week.
