The Opportunity:

Olds College Centre for Innovation (OCCI) oversees all applied research initiatives at Olds College. In alignment with the college’s Growing 2025 strategic plan, OCCI and Olds College Smart Farm (OCSF) have expanded the college’s capacity to deliver applied research in crop production, livestock production, environmental stewardship, and smart agriculture and technology integration. The research program is a $7 million to $8 million annual portfolio involving funding from numerous federal and provincial grants, fee-for-service contracts, donations, and other revenue sources. OCCI manages upwards of 80 -100 research projects each year.
OCCI is in growth mode and requires the services of a Grants Facilitator who will work closely with our Research Managers, project teams and faculty researchers to identify funding opportunities, assist staff to craft successful research proposals and help with reporting on funded research projects. You will work within the OCCI administration team to support the day-to-day activities of the research staff. The intent of this position is to increase the quantity, quality and success rate of grant submissions to funders. This position reports directly to the Director, Applied Research.


Key Job Functions:

  • Identify appropriate funding opportunities from granting councils; municipal, provincial, federal and international granting agencies, industry funds and foundations – wherever they are!;
  • Communicate funding opportunities to staff;
  • Understand and communicate the details and rules for funding programs to OCCI and College staff (intent and needs, allowable costs, matching fund allowances, submission dates, etc);
  • Help OCCI staff and faculty write funding proposals to ensure the fund specifications are met; assist with submissions;
  • Project manage the grant application process;
  • Post award, with researchers, track reporting needs and dates to ensure compliance with deadlines and submission guidelines;
  • Work closely with OCCI Research Accountant and admin support staff for financial and statistical reporting needs
  • Work closely with Research and Scholarly Lead to advance faculty-led research in natural sciences and social sciences;
  • Manage funding support webpages for OCCI;
  • Develop grant writing resources, including “how-to’s”, training and workshops;
  • Makes decisions with the College’s interests in mind, while demonstrating inclusivity, openness, transparency, civility, and respect
  • Acts ethically, openly, honestly, and respectfully to build and maintain an environment of trust, safety, and well-being
Skills and Knowledge:
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture or related credentials. Research, Technical Writing, or a related field is an asset
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in research, grant writing and the development and operation of research projects
  • Demonstrable knowledge of funding appropriate for the applied research activities at the College.
  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Proven track record of successful grant applications
  • Excellent communication abilities and a good “people person”
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment and work independently as required.
  • Required to multitask on a variety of duties and projects.
  • Must have a curious mindset and openness to help others succeed
  • Proficiency in all Google Apps, particularly Email, Calendar, Sheets, Docs and Drive would be a definite asset.
  • Must be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of programs including Word, Publisher, Power Point, and Excel, as well as Adobe Acrobat Professional.
