Personal Care Assistant (PCA)

Position Summary
Are you passionate about serving the seniors of our province? We are looking for some workers with some life experience, who are passionate about caring for some of Newfoundland’s best seniors!
The primary responsibility of the Personal Care Worker, St. John’s for our Personal Care Home. The Personal Care Home provides quality, on-going personal care in our Personal Care Home in Airport Heights. Duties and responsibilities would include, but not limited to, aiding seniors in personal care activities, hospitality services, and creating a warm and inviting culture for seniors to call home. This position reports directly to the Personal Care Home Manager.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications, skills, and abilities:
Education and Experience
  • Life experience serving others; and,
  • Experience in a health-related industry and/or with seniors is considered an asset.
Skills and Abilities
  • Desire to serve seniors;
  • Ability to provide outstanding customer service;
  • Desire and ability to both provide and exemplify exceptional care;
  • Flexible to cater to resident needs;
  • Problem-solving skills;
  • Focus on confidentiality;
  • Strong communication skills to effectively interact with residents, family, staff, and volunteers alike; and,
  • Basic computer skills.
Certifications:
  • We provide on-site training;
  • Criminal and Vulnerable Record Check;
  • First-Aid Certificate;
  • Medical Report; and,
  • Immunization Records.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be part of a team who is responsible for, but not limited to, the following responsibilities and duties:
Resident Care
  • Supervise/assist as required with resident bathing, grooming, dressing, eating, transferring, walking, etc;
  • Accompany residents to outside appointments as necessary;
  • Assist residents in daily activities such as bed making and general tidiness of their rooms;
  • Launder residents’ clothes as scheduled;
  • Ensure all soiled linen/clothing is transported to the laundry room;
  • Monitor changes in residents’ condition and behaviour and advise the manager of changes;
  • Document changes in progress notes;
  • Socialize with residents;
  • Encourage residents to stay in contact with family;
  • Assist new residents with integration, introducing them to other residents and inviting to participate in activities;
  • Orient new residents to the environment and routines; and,
  • Maintain a caring and interested attitude when dealing with residents and families.
Housekeeping Duties
  • Complete detailed room cleaning as presented on the daily schedule;
  • Daily complete the basic duties for every room (clean sink, replace towels, sweep and mop floors, etc.);
  • Launder linens and clothing as needed and scheduled;
  • Ensure hallways and doorways are free from obstruction to prevent accidents;
  • Sweep/mop hallways during the day as needed to keep free of water; and,
  • Report the need for repairs using the form provided to the manager.
Kitchen Duties
  • Set tables, pour juice, make tea and coffee prior to mealtime;
  • Serve meals and snacks as instructed by the cook or Team Lead;
  • Encourage residents to eat their meals and snacks;
  • Encourage compliance with special diets;
  • Record changes in residents eating habits or appetite;
  • Clear tables, wipe and disinfect when the meal is complete;
  • Load dishwashers and run; and,
  • Empty dining room garbage, refill ice cube trays, sweep the floor when needed.
Security Duties
  • Participate in emergency drills as required.
