Huddle Selkirk Peer Leader
OPPORTUNITY: We have a full-time position available for a Peer Leader for our Huddle Selkirk program. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, the Huddle Selkirk Peer Leader will create a safe, supportive, empowering, and welcoming environment for youth to be active decision-makers and partners in the program and will play an integral role in the development, delivery and support of Huddle Selkirk services and programming and service navigation and connection.
POSITION SUMMARY: The Huddle Selkirk Peer Leader will work as a part of the service team in our Integrated Youth Hub; a highly collaborative partnership between agencies and organizations. The Youth Huddle is intended to be a one-stop-shop for youth to have ease of access to mental and physical health, addictions, financial and employment supports, culturally appropriate Indigenous counselling, supports, events and activities as well as opportunities to connect with their community and each other through structured educational programming, and events. This program is designed to help youth (12 – 29) reach their goals and highest potential.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide one-to-one and group peer support and the enhancement of cultural connections, both traditional and current.
  • Greet and engage participants utilizing walk up and drop-in services, throughout their involvement at the Youth Hub, and liaise with families and service providers · Provide basic service navigation and ensure linkages are made with Youth Hub partners and community resources
  • Provide community outreach which may include facilitating presentations to community partners and youth participant recruitment
  • Co-facilitate educational sessions on a range of topics related to recovery, health, and well-being
  • Support community engagement activities · Evaluate immediate safety risks, de-escalate, and diffuse conflict in an assertive, timely fashion
  • Act as a first responder (CPR/First aid)
  • Create and facilitate a calm, compassionate environment for those experiencing distress.
  • Facilitate life skills improvement
  • Provide information over the phone and in person on community resources and services offered at the Youth hub and in the community
  • Maintain and update documentation and statistical data as prescribed
  • Role model healthy boundaries, resiliency, self-care, and safe, healthy lifestyles.
  • Contribute to community-wide initiatives to advance the mission and ends of the organization

QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
  • Grade 12 with additional human services related coursework and over one year of direct service experience as a peer supporter, or a comparable combination of skills and experience
  • Peer Support Certification or a willingness to pursue certification is an asset
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers’ License and access to a reliable vehicle
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous populations, the impact of colonization on Canada’s Indigenous peoples, the historical and continuing impact of the residential school system, and traditional Indigenous healing and wellness beliefs, practices, and support agencies
  • An understanding of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and community services
  • Knowledge of settlement services and the impacts of immigration on newcomer youth
  • Knowledge of local mental health and addictions system and community services
  • Must have recent satisfactory criminal records check/vulnerable persons, and recent satisfactory abuse registry checks
  • Working hours will include evenings and weekends
  • Personal lived experience with mental health and/or addictions challenges, recovery, and resiliency as well as a willingness, readiness, and ability to share own experiences
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $17.46-$21.63 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
Schedule:
  • Day shift
  • Evening shift
  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekends as needed
Ability to commute/relocate:
  • Selkirk, MB: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (preferred)
Education:
  • Secondary School (preferred)
Experience:
  • supportive care: 1 year (preferred)
