LAND GUARDIAN COORDINATOR

About the Role
Reporting to the Fish and Wildlife Manager in the Natural Resources and Heritage Department, the term Teechik Land Guardian Coordinator plays a vital role in preserving our natural heritage. This dynamic position involves planning and executing exciting Land Guardian activities, recruiting and mentoring a group of casual Guardians, and ensuring the program has the necessary equipment and supplies. You will implement impactful programming in the field and the community, communicate our inspiring results, and develop compelling proposals and reports for funding and collaborations. What we offer:
· $54.85 - $67.04 per hour/per annum Band 2 (Based on education & experience)
· Flexible Work Hours: Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation offers flexible working hours. Positions will be classified biweekly from 65-80 hours to be determined with supervisors (some guidelines will apply).
· 4% Northern Community Remoteness Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time.
  • 4% Northern Travel Allowance for employees residing in Old Crow full-time
· 4 weeks vacation to start plus two weeks paid time off over the Christmas season

What You Will Do:
· Annual Work Plans: Develop work plans aligned with VGFN’s seasonal harvest calendar.
· Recruitment: Recruit and engage Old Crow community members and VGFN citizens as casual Land Guardians.
· Procurement: Research and procure equipment, materials, supplies, and technology for effective and safe operation.
· Supervision: Coordinate and supervise a team of casual Land Guardians for on-the-land programming, including wildlife and environmental monitoring, harvest support, and education in traditional and scientific skills.
· Data Management: Collect, manage, and analyze environmental monitoring data with Land Guardians, colleagues, and partners.
· Reporting: Report regularly to the supervisor on daily operations and results, to the community on annual work plans and outcomes, and to external partners as needed.
· Funding: Prepare applications for and reports to funding agencies to support Land Guardian programming.
· Knowledge Sharing: Prepare scientific and traditional knowledge reports for the community, external partners, and peer-reviewed journals.
· Field Operations: Conduct and lead safe and responsible field operations in accordance with VGFN’s Health and Safety policies.
· Knowledge Transfer: Support the intergenerational transfer of traditional harvesting and ecological knowledge between VGFN citizens and others.
· Compliance: Ensure decisions and approaches adhere to legislation, policy, and guidelines.
· Leadership: Model and promote VGG Standards of Conduct and professional behaviour for Land Guardians and community members.
· Communication: Accurately and timely communicate Land Guardian-related information to citizens, VGFN, and partners.
· External Funding: Obtain external funding to support Land Guardian programming.
· Community Engagement: Coordinate on-the-land activities that engage VGFN citizens, support traditional harvesting activities, and collect valuable environmental information.
· Positive Interactions: Foster positive and engaging interactions with colleagues, citizens, and the public.
What you bring:
· A diploma in natural or renewable resource management, fisheries management or science, wildlife management or science, land management, environmental studies or science, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
· Ability to manage projects, budgets, funding applications, reporting, research, and Land Guardian programming in remote environments.
· Experience conducting field operations, preferably in the VGFN Traditional Territory.
· Ability to conduct fieldwork year-round in diverse seasonal conditions, handling extreme temperatures, precipitation, and winds in all seasons.
· Ability to travel for training, attend meetings, and access remote areas of the Traditional Territory.
· Knowledge of and experience safely operating boats, snowmobiles, and ATVs.
· Proficiency in leading fish, wildlife, and habitat monitoring and research projects in the Arctic or subarctic boreal forest.
· Experience living in and supporting the operations of remote field camps.
· A history of working with and engaging Indigenous communities and citizens.
· Knowledge of fish and wildlife management and environmental monitoring techniques.
· Awareness of Vuntut Gwitchin history, culture, traditions, and languages, including the Final Agreement.
· A strong desire to uplift and support our community.
· Experience working in an Indigenous northern community is an asset.
· First Aid Certification.
