The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education is responsible for the administration of the public school system within the boundaries of Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, supporting approximately 12,000 students in 38 schools.

Available Position: Schools Plus Community Outreach Worker - ONE POSITION

1. Base School - Baddeck Academy or Cabot Education Centre (to be determined - applicants interested in either location are invited to apply) (travel throughout CBVRCE will be required)

Salary - $26.49/hour to $30.02/hour (depending on qualifications and experience)
Hours of Work - 7 hours daily (flexible schedule required as needed)
Position Status - Permanent Full-time Non-Union position (Please note this position works 12 months annually with allotted vacation time)

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS IN EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Education, Sociology, Child & Youth Studies, Community Studies (with related concentration, major or minor), OR Completion of a two-year related post-secondary diploma or certificate such as a community services diploma, human services diploma, social services diploma, Child Youth Care diploma, child development diploma.
  • Minimum of two years' experience working with children and youth, and experience in providing group programming
  • Proven organizational skills;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Accurate record keeping and reporting;
  • Ability to work cooperatively within the multidisciplinary, inter-agency framework with school and community partners;
  • The ability to maintain and promote confidentiality;
  • Valid Driver’s license and reliable vehicle;
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed to meet the needs of children/youth and families


Additional Required Competencies:

  • Direct knowledge and experience of the community served;
  • A broad knowledge base related to the physical, psycho-social, and emotional needs of a family unit as it relates to academic and social success;
  • Ability to establish and maintain caring, supportive, and trusting relationships;
  • Knowledge of community-based resources and services available in the community that can support students and families;
  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate with other persons and services;
  • Knowledge of normal/abnormal child development;
  • The ability to formulate initiatives which support academic and social success for students;
  • The ability to work both independently and as a collaborative multi-disciplinary team member;
  • The ability to apply knowledge, experience, and commitment in the areas of race relations, cross cultural understanding and human rights and diversity;
  • The desire and ability to engage in continuing education and professional development;


JOB DESCRIPTION:

Reporting to the Lead Schools Plus Facilitator and taking direction and guidance from, as well as working with, the Schools Plus Facilitator, the Community Outreach Worker shall be responsible for working within the Schools Plus integrated service delivery model to facilitate support and services to students. Working with an assigned group of schools, the Community Outreach Worker will establish an active network of community groups representing the diverse nature of the community and build bridges to connect families and schools with the goal of improving student success. The successful candidate will work as a member of the Schools Plus Team, providing support and group programming to children, youth and families. The Community Outreach Worker will assist in navigating children, youth and their families to a wide variety of services and resources in the community.



Key Responsibilities:


The Community Outreach Worker shall perform tasks assigned by the Schools Plus Facilitator and/or Lead Schools Plus Facilitator. These tasks may vary, from time to time, with the evolution of the organization and may include but not be limited to the following:
  • Establishing positive relationships with students identified as at-risk and act as a coach/mentor
  • Assist with linking children, youth and families to support services and resources in the community;
  • Facilitate programming and group sessions (i.e.; self-esteem, social skills, anger management, etc.) as deemed necessary
  • Assist in running school groups to support students as identified by the core analysis which includes activities outside of the regular classroom hours such as lunch period, recess, afterschoool, weekends, and the summer period, which may require flexibility with the successful candidate's work schedule.
  • Work collaboratively with school staff, agency staff, students and families to assist with timely access to services, programs and community resources
  • Provide direct support to children, youth and families and helping to run school groups that support youth with various needs;
  • Provide transportation, encouragement, support, and accompaniment to various appointments;
  • Maintaining records of contacts and actions taken with families, students, staff etc. using student services information systems;
  • Assisting and supporting parents/guardians with various, enhanced child management and like skill tasks (i.e.; parenting skills information, communication, school attendance supports, self-advocacy, stress management etc.) and developing self-advocacy skills;
  • Establishing and maintaining proactive linkages to community services and supports;
  • Providing opportunities for the family and the school to meet and support their children;
  • Assist with the identification of gaps in services for families in the community
  • Perform other related duties as required.
