Student Engagement and Retention
Who We Are
Simon Fraser University is a leading research university, advancing an inclusive and sustainable future. Our purpose – the essence of SFU – is to create and connect knowledge, learning and community for deeper understanding and meaningful impact. We are committed to fostering excellence, innovation, belonging and community in all that we do.
Student Engagement and Retention provides and facilitates transformational and engaging opportunities that contribute to a student's overall development, helping them be academically successful. This includes our new student transition programing that welcomes, informs and connects new students to the SFU community. Our unit supports the academic mission of the university by helping new students in their transition into the institution, as well as supporting specific populations of students including Uggla Family Scholarship recipients and NCAA students. We also provide academic advising to students in academic difficulty, and administer central student retention programs, such as the Back on Track program. Our team culture is student centered and collaborative.
About the Role
The Academic Advisor works in a developmental capacity with undergraduate students, including prospective and new students, undeclared students, and students in academic difficulty, and assists them in developing academic plans that support their academic, personal and career goals. The position advises on career options, reviews and recommends options available to students in academic difficulty, and refers students to appropriate resources available through other University departments, and in the broader community. The Academic Advisor works with students in crisis and handles confidential student information appropriately.
