Primary Objectives:
Effective management of Parliamentary Education Services to ensure the provision of high quality education,
engagement, public relations and information programs relating to the operations of the Northern Territory
Legislative Assembly and its committees.
Context Statement:
The Department of the Legislative Assembly provides the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, its Members
and Committees with quality and timely support for the operation of the Parliament, Parliamentary Committees,
the Parliament House precinct, and Electorate Offices (and staff).
Parliamentary Education Services (PES), which is part of the Parliamentary Support Division, is responsible for
providing education programs for school groups, government staff, community groups and other visitors, and
conducting tours of Parliament House. PES works at Parliament House, in schools and across the Northern
Territory.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Supervise and support the Parliamentary Education Officer to deliver parliamentary education and
professional development programs.
2. Develop and deliver appropriate education and awareness programs (including intrastate outreach
programs) and professional learning opportunities for students, teachers and community groups, including
resource development.
3. Develop and deliver seminars and induction programs for Assembly Members, public servants,
departmental staff and other stakeholders.

4. Ensure strong working relationships with teachers, learning institutions, related organisations (e.g. NT
Electoral Commission, Supreme Court, Government House and NT Library) and interstate Parliamentary
Education Units.
5. Assist with the development and implementation of public engagement strategies for the Assembly and its
committees.
6. Co-ordinate education programs and conduct Parliament House tours.
7. Provide advice to the Speaker, Members and departmental officers on parliamentary education and public
engagement and manage significant departmental events.
8. Manage the Unit's webpages, Facebook posts, statistical records and reports.
Selection Criteria:
Essential:
1. Demonstrated ability to set priorities and manage and lead a team under pressure in a demanding
environment.
2. Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver education programs to a diverse range of small and large
groups.
3. Knowledge and demonstrated experience of teaching and learning principles for adults and children.
4. Highly developed communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures
maintain effective relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
5. Ability to respect and adhere to the requirements of confidentiality, impartiality and integrity.
Desirable:
1. Territory qualifications in education.
2. Demonstrated knowledge or experience of parliamentary processes.
Requirements for Selection and Undertaking the Role:
- Prior to being formally offered a position with the Department of the Legislative Assembly, applicants will
be required to submit a pre-employment declaration which includes information regarding their criminal
history, conflict of interest and other continuing employment or volunteer work.
- The successful applicant will be subject to a criminal history check. A criminal history will not exclude an
applicant from this position unless it is a relevant criminal history.
- Applicants are required to hold a current Working with Children Clearance notice (Ochre Card), or have the
ability to obtain one, from SAFE NT.
- Access to recreation leave will be restricted during Parliamentary sitting periods.
- Uniforms are provided and are required to be worn when conducting Parliament House tours, delivering
educational and outreach programs, and interacting with the public.
- The position is based at Parliament House; however, will require travel throughout the Northern Territory
at times. A current driver licence is required.
- The right to disconnect – This position is not expected to be available for regular work-related contact
outside of normal work hours.
